I just purchased a bushmaster varminter and want to put some good glass on it. I have been reading up on the new Nikon m-223 but there is not much feedback on the scope yet. I like the ability to change from 100yds to 200 to 300 etc with the turn of the turret. Any info the M-223 or similar scopes or personal favorites that will work on a .223 platform would be great. Thanks for reading

They may be good for the layman or an entry level shooter, but when you start switching up ammunition types or traveling with the rifle (altitude and other environmental changes), the changes can be significant enough to cause misses.

That being said, the .223 round isn't necessarily bad round to use a basic BDC type elevation as it is pretty flat shooting (inside 300yds especially) and has minimal differences between one type of ammunition to another so long as you're not making overly dramatic changes. It really comes down to what you're shooting at and what you consider a good hit or not.

If you are shooting for hits on full size IPSC steel targets out to 4-500yds, you'll hardly notice a difference. Shooting at varmits past 200yds, and you'll start to have wounding shots or clean misses. You just have to decide on what your application and needs are going to be when selecting your optic.

Re: .223 Scope

Thanks for the info guys. I took a look at both scopes. I really like Nikon clarity, however the zoom power of the viper is awesome for the price. I want to make sure they have turrets. Thanks for the replys!

Re: .223 Scope

Give the SS 3x9x42 a look too! May be less magnification than your wanting, but it's a hell of a scope for a .223 and with a little practice you can do the same thing you could do with BDC. Just a thought.

Re: .223 Scope

Ok, you guys are convincing me not to go with the BDC(probably best). But I definitly want a scope with exposed turrets. Does the viper come with exposed turrets standard or do you have to order it that way. The descriptions at most websites are not very good.
Thanks Fred

Re: .223 Scope

I have a Mark AR 6-18x40 on my Mini 14 Target and have it really close to setting the elevation turret to 100 yd zero but the wind was keeping me from doing this since the day i took it out for initial sight in was really poor day to do anything at the range! This optic has the T1 Turrets for the 55 gr 223 round and need some time on non windy days before i set the elevation turret but it's a really nice product for what it's intended for.
