.223 velocities with Berger 85.5s?

Wondering if anyone has loaded 85.5 Bergers in a 26” .223? Just curious what velocities you’re able to get. Waiting on a prefit .223 barrel and slowly accumulating various projectiles before it gets here.

I’m around 2800-2825 fps with the 85.5gr bergers and a 26” proof prefit

I’m running 2775 with 90SMKs and Varget. 27” barrel with .155fb. 4895 is slightly faster in the same gun. I could go higher still with minimal pressure but brass life goes in the toilet.

85.5s were around the same speeds because of the longer bearing surface and actually hit pressure sooner than the 90s.

Thanks. You using h4895 or imr4895? I impulse bought 8# of imr4895 at my last trip to my reloading store, usually using Varget and VV N140

H4895. IMR is pretty comparable but you’ll probably need to tweak the load, it won’t be a 1:1.

24.5 grains of varget at 2930

LOL if you’re actually running this fast with 85.5s you’re at like 80k psi+.

I would say that 2850 fps is for 26' barrel AND properly long freebore AND proper powder ''normal'' ''hot'' round with 85.5gr Berger in 223REM... It can be tolerable.

My rem 700 26” 1:7 barrel is 2754. I have taken it to 1000 yards and it is solid. For me this was a good compromise load. Room for a hot day and not overpressure the case. I don’t remember the load off of my head. I will have to look it up

That would be perfect for me. Thanks for the info.

I looked it up. My load is 23.8 Varget in Lapua brass with BR-4 primers and an OAL 2.550.

I shoot F-Class and to be honest this is only a great 600 yard F-Class load. I would not take this to 1000 on a scored target, at least in wind. It is fine load for shooting steel. I am am going down in caliber just to reduce the recoil fatigue. I just turned 75. I am going to 22BR. I can get 3100 pretty easily and then gets me close to my 6x47L using 115 DTAC's at a half the recoil. Padam on here says that I will have blowups due to being over 300,000 RPM. We will see.

Just my observations

Cool. I would be using this for PRS matches that are within 700 yards or so. I’m not really good enough to justify a fancy 6mm and I just want to get as many trigger pulls as possible. The cheaper cost of components and ease of finding them is also a benefit for me. Maybe when I burn out the barrel I’ll have it reamed for a 22gt!

Good luck with your 22br

That’s like crazy fast, regular .223 or AI? What freebore?
I'd say that's unlikely either way(especially 24.5grs) without a crazy long barrel. I ran 88gr elds with 25.8grs of varget at 2896fps from a 28" barrel and a long freebore chamber for over a year.

There are F-Class guys running .165+ fb single shot 30s not getting anywhere close to those speeds.
