I am about to start a 223ai build I have a stock bottom metal and surgeon short action I just can't deciede on 7 or 8 twist and how long to run the barrel debating somewere between 20" and 24" minimum contour size is remington varmint/sendero max is 1.00 at the muzzle either way it will be heavily fluted. I am currently leaning toward a 22" 8 twist .900 at muzzle with 12 1/8" deep flutes threaded 5/8x24 so I can run my 308 suppresor on it.

I would like to get at least 3000fps with 75-80gr bullets anybody have any experience.

20" should get you there. Certainly no need for a long barrel to burn the powder fully.

I just took my 223ai out on Friday and was getting 2920fps with "light" loads. I'll be pushing them harder shortly, and don't see 3000fps as difficult by any stretch of the imagination.

I've also been down the really chunky 223ai road and will likely not return. Heaviest I'd likely go again is a Rem varmint contour with flutes. There simply is no need for more mass, and you sacrifice handling with all that weight. If only the Remington LTR was twisted 1:8....
