Will it work? I did some searching, but didn't find much. I'm thinking a 26" 1/8 twist barrel if it will work.

Are you serious? 26 inch barrel on an AR? What length gas system would you run on that long of a barrel?
And I think the limiting factor is actually going to be mag length. How much longer are AI's than a non AI?

You can do it .... But because of the magazine length restrictions of an AR you cannot make a lot of use out of the extra capacity you gain by moving the shoulder forward especially if your wanting to shoot really long high BC bullets . The second consideration you need to keep in mind is that you are going to be creating a much steeper shoulder angle which could cause problems with feeding .

I would think a "rifle" gas tube is what one would use. There are plenty of 26" AR's out there. Heck you could go longer if you wanted. The upper I am spec'ing out will have a 24-26" tube with a rifle gas system.
As for the other, you would not be able to really make the AI shine within the AR package unless you went to the AR10 platform, but why???

Come on guys ..... don't make me JUSTIFY a new gun. I realize the mag would limit things a bit, but it would still be a little better than a standard .223. I'm thinking either 69gr SMK or 75gr BTHPs. White Oak makes a 26" barrel with a 2" longer gas system I'm interested in trying out. I've got a 7mm mag for long range stuff.

Ask WOA what they think about the AI in the AR platform, they would know better than I do. I'm looking to get one of their varmint uppers soon, heard lots of good things about them.

Think about how far a 69 or 75 grain bullet sits inside the case when loaded to AR Magazine length . They are gonna sit well past the neck shoulder junction where you gain all your capacity which means you will have gained nothing . If you were shooting a really short varmint style bullet you may see some gains but not the heavy bullet route you want to go . Many of the guys building 223 AI bolt guns are going with a long leade reamer so that they can load the bullets way over .223 length and really make use of the extra case capacity .
As many AR owners as there are if this was a really viable option you would see them all over the place . Sorry Bro

You would also be limited to straight magazines, as the AI jams up in curved magazines. I think it is around 10, after that it starts getting real screwy.

I heard of a few people a couple years back that shot in highpower rifle competition, that shot 23 AI and they had no issues at all with feeding the rounds. I don't remember if they tweaked the mags or not. I had a 6 TCU which esentially is a 6mm/223 AI and I never had feeding issues. I used vietnam era 20 rd mags with the old metal follower.
