I'm looking at 224V build and have been trying to locate a few actions, barreled actions, or complete rifles that accept the 224V .4255 bolt face (6.8SPC).

(Updating list as suggestions come in) I've found so far have been:
  • MPA barreled or complete
  • Curtis Custom Axiom action
  • ARC Nucleus
  • Bighorn Origin
  • Ultimatum Precision Deadline
  • R700 6.8 SPC (requires barrel swap)
  • I think Bighorn TL3 can be made in .4255 bolt face also.
  • Savage 10 with bolt face swap and rebarrel.
Any others that have bolt face options that fit? I'm sure a few more will be popping up in next month or two around SHOT Show, but hoping a few guys on here may have some insight beyond my GoogleFu. Thanks!

Edited: I'll be adding suggestions to this list as they come in.

I am building a Tikka T3 in 6.8 SPC which (as you know) uses the same bolt face as 224V. It took a local gun smith 20 minutes on the CNC to open up the bolt face to 0.425. Ejector position doesn't change (same place on 223 and 308 Tikka bolts) and the extractor depth only has to be brought up by 0.17 to 0.20. Super simple to do by various methods, depending on how rigorous you want the solution to be.

Just waiting on the barrel, which I should have this week or next.

@Subwrx300, have you decide which action you're going with? I'm currently planning a build myself and can't make up my mind. I've never owned a custom action so that makes the decision even harder.
Haven't made any decisions yet. Taking my time on this build as I've decided to build two identical rifles in different calibers: a 224V and 6.5CM (maybe 6CM but not sure).

I'm leaning a bit towards the ARC but only because of bolt head swaps. Once I do some extra research into other systems, I'll put together list.

Bighorn TL3. I have 3 with all.their bolt heads which are cheaper than Mausingfield bolt heads

I keep coming back to the TL3. When researching via search I read quite a few posts calling the TL3 sloppy. I've never handled one but all the videos I've seen they definitely dont appear to be sloppy. Although they don't have changeable bolt heads I also keep looking at the Curtis Custom Vector.

I find nothing sloppy about my 3. Those that dont know how to run a bolt say they can get them to bind. Mine doesnt bind but I know how to run a bolt...

Why people call them sloppy is because of the “play” in the action. This is more conducive to poor conditions. If you know how to handle the bolt, the action is amazing.

“Sloppy” is a bad term. They have more play in them than some. Some people like this and some people don’t. Personal preference.

They don’t bind when you are behind them and run them properly.

All the downsides of an AR without any of the pesky bolt gun advantages...

I guess, but the only reason I can think of to run a .224V in a bolt action is because of factory ammo. In that case you might as well use the magazine that the cartridge was designed to use. If you reload, well the .223ai vrs the .224v thread come to mind.

For now maybe, but I'm guessing once mags and boltfaces get sorted out and standardized you'll see the 224V hotrodded to levels the 223AI can't quite reach.
I don't really see the point of shooting if you don't reload, so all the factory ammo arguments go in one ear and out the other...

Somebody please convince AI to release a Valkyrie bolt face bolt with magazine for their short action AT's and AX's... Be so nice and easy to do the barrel swap. I put this on my Santa wish list.

If you reload there is no reason you have to send a 88, 90 etc. down range at 3300fps from a 22 creedmoor, x47, 250 AI. A wheel can only be so round, not sure why it has to keep being re-invented...

Kinda like the 243 Win... 6mm Rem... 6XC... 6CM (Comp Match)... 6x47L... 6 Creed... 6 BR/BRX/BRD/BRM/Dasher/BRA... ???

Uintah precision bolt action upper for your ar15.
I've considered this, but I specifically want two identical rifles for competition. The bolt AR upper is cool but it wouldn't meet my goal of two identical rifles for future practice/comp guns. I'll likely run both in matches but want to be able to have same weighting/balance for both .

You forgot the 6mm Crusader...

...and the 240 Tomahawk, 6mm Hagar, 6 RAT, 6 Fat RAT... and probably a dozen more :ROFLMAO:

That mid-sized 6mm case 'realm' has been done to death, several times over. It raises the question: how many more cases filling the exact same niche do we need? Answer always seems to be: at least one more... ;)

People like 'different' even if it isn't necessarily 'new', just as long as it's new to *them*.

To the top; any new ideas to add?

Really wish Howa would make a run of 6.8/224V bolts. They would literally sell out overnight. I'd love to try a $600 barreled action too (true short action; not the mini action) just for kicks. Easy to swap in and out of chassis.

Why not the mini? It’s only 350 bucks
Yeah, I've been kicking around buying a 223mini for a while but just can't do it as the basis for a 224V build.
  1. Max OAL limited to 2.300" ; want to run 224V 88s/90s seated long with Custom reamer at 2.4"+ (extra powder and bullet seated no further than neck shoulder junction.)
  2. Limited stock choices (if any) available.
  3. We ant bolt to run exactly like my normal short action as a trainer/backup rifle.
But I might still get one just to tinker with. They are cheap for sure!

On a side note, does anyone here have a Howa 223 short action that can post closeup pictures of bolt face? Ideally, next to a Howa 308 bolt face.

I'm trying to where the extractor sits relative to bolt body. Mark from SAC is willing to try opening up a Howa 223 to 6.8SPC but im curious if it would require adding metal to build out the extractor cross pin or if they simply use a thicker extractor body (compared to 308).

This would make the switch pretty easy. Much like opening up the Tika.
