Looking to buy a new hunting rifle this year and I've narrowed it down (I think) to a 7mm Rem Mag or 300 Win Mag. I have a 30-06, .308 and a 30-30 but want something a little bigger for Elk and a possible trip to South Africa. I'm looking at a Rem 700 CDL or XHR. The CDL is a 26" barrel and the XHR is a 24" barrel. Both have the same twist rate for the caliber. Would I be loosing too much with the 24" barrel? I can't really see myself taking shots over 400-450 yards.

If you are not going past 500yds ................24" for sure . A 26" will help push heavier bullets alittle faster for some long distance shots. Short to mid range I'd stick with the 24" . Just my 2cents .

Mine is a 26" Bartlein barrel.
