Has anyone shot the 240 through a 1 in 10 and got good stability and long range trajectory?? Getting ready to send barrel and action to get fit, but now don't know if should get a different barrel. Bought a Shilen #8 for this 300 WM build but kinda wanted to try the 240's. Will he Make it, Bettie Don't?????? LOL

Re: 240 SMK in a 1 in 10 ?????

I wanted to do the same thing. George at GAP said that it would need at least a 1:9" twist to truely stabilize it. I am not goingto question him on that.

Re: 240 SMK in a 1 in 10 ?????

My advice would be to get the 10 twist and shoot the 208 AMAX. Has a .647 BC and you can get them to about 3000fps. The 240s won't be going near as fast. Also when you go 9 twist you are kind of boxing yourself into the much heavier bullet and then what if you don't like it? The 10 twist will stabilize the 240. I've shot them in my 300WM but wasn't impressed with the velocities. Accuracy was fine.

Bye golly jee, sombody finally came out and said it. What kind of velocities were you getting just for giggles. Would only use the 240's for certain applications. Just wondered if it was able to do.

Re: 240 SMK in a 1 in 10 ?????

I've heard of guys getting them to shoot well from a 300 RUM and 30-338 Lapua Imp with 1-10 barrels but I've tried them in two factroy 1-10 rifles chambered in 300 Win mag and they would not stabilize.

Henson Aluminum tipped bullets makes a 180gr that has a BC of .711 and they will shoot from a 1-10 twist at 308 speeds , their about a dollar fifty each so I doubt that may guys will be shooting alot of them.

The 240 SMK did good in my 1/10 30-06, at 2610 fps.

Stable and accurate to 1K+.

Here's how they looked at 100 yards:

Re: 240 SMK in a 1 in 10 ?????

This sounds like a post for Tribe!

Yes, he has shot 240SMK's through a 1:10 twist barrel. If I remember correctly, the 240's flew "like a freight train through the wind" at 600 yards. As in "they weren't the fastest in the world, but they didn't get pushed around much either" type of trajectory.

Let me see if I can get Tribe to chime in.

Heh... mind like a steel trap that one... that seems like an awful long time ago Ranger

All I'd offer, is a +1 to both Rob01 and MontanaMarine... I've gone to running a gentler load for the 240's, and my 1:10 300 Rem SAUM really likes them at around 2470 on that gentle side... I've run them a lot hotter, but also beat the hell out of my brass

... the bullet does hold it's velocity though.

Also, to expand on Rob01's theme, I've been playing with the 175's, and it was shooting those as well, at 3270+.... without any tuning to date.

Re: 240 SMK in a 1 in 10 ?????

Thanks for the info. I was gonna load them down to say 2750-2800 with my 300 WM. I really want to shoot the 208 and 210's. When you look at the Sierra website the BC on the 210 is higher than the 220's. Is it a typo or did the ogive change as they used the same jacket and kinda footballed it a little to much?? Has anyone else noticed that???

</div></div> Nice group MtMar. About a .7 or so. Them damn long 240's were still tail whippin' when they went through the paper. If you would have shot them at 200 yards you probably would have had the same size group. LOL....
