What is the shortest barrel length use and still get the most out of the 115 dtac in a .243, 7.5 twist?

I would really like to go 24", but question what I'll give up from just going 26". TIA.

Re: .243/115 dtac barrel length question

I have a 27" and it works great. I don't feel it's overly long but some do. I wouldn't go less than 26" myself. I'm running them about 3020fps now with the BN but with the moly they are around 2985fps and it took about 24.5 MOA to reach 1000 for me with that load. I haven't shot it with the new load to that distance yet.

Re: .243/115 dtac barrel length question

Just as soon as I shoot the barrel out of mine I will have a sawzall and crude crowning machine (dremel to knock the burs out) waiting. I plan to have multiple loads with diff powders, burn rates, all with 115 DTACS and bergers if I can get anybody to give me some for the test. I plan on shooting each load over a chrono then sawing an inch off and repeating all the way down to 20" or so. I'll be starting with a 27 1/2" tube. While I know it wont be perfect, it should give a very good idea as to what speeds you can get with what barrel length. Should be fun, I'll be sure to take lots of pics and round up a few chronos to shoot through.

That sounds like a great idea. I am VERY interested to see the results. A .243 pushing dtacs is my next build and barrel length was a concern of mine as well. I am interested to see how fps you lose per inch of barrel removed.

v thanks Haz.

Re: .243/115 dtac barrel length question

Just to give you an apples to apples comparison for simulated velocities with the 243 Win using the 115gr DTAC and 40.2gr of H4350. This is coming from Quickload with a target max pressure of 60.2K PSI.

Length fps
30" 3012
28" 2971
26" 2926
24" 2876
22" 2819
20" 2754
18" 2680 <-For people following Lowlight's thread

The only variable I changed was barrel length. All other variables remained equal. This should give you a rough estimate of what you'll gain/lose with barrel length on that setup.

Enjoy...............
