.243 + H'dy 87g BTHP + Varget load

Re: .243 + H'dy 87g BTHP + Varget load

Mate, welcome to the hide. The Hornady manual doesn't even list Varget as one of its loads, however Sierra reckons a max load for the 90gr as 34.4. I've used 36 grains (worked up carefully) for 90 grains Scenars but the performance wasn't up to scratch.

Work up carefully to find a load that suits your rifle. There's also a thread specifically just for .243 loads you might want to refer to for ideas. Best of luck.

I use to use 36.0g Varget behind a 87g HPBT, or the 87g vmax with win brass and CCI200 primers. In a Sako with a 1-10" twist. They were tack drivers. But again just work your way up, and by no means is this max for that round. I think i pulled the data off a 85g bullet out of a book.

I loaded up to 36.8 of varget, but was never impressed with the results. Finally settled on 40.3g of IMR 4350 and am very pleased. Not sure why Varget never worked that well with my 243.
