Girlfriend is wanting a bigger ar based gun than the 223. She was looking at the 260 and the 243 dpms. Probably never shoot farther than 600. Mostly benchrest or prone shooting. Looks like the 260 is a pain to find brass for. 243 would be easier to find brass for. Any input on other pros and cons for either

Re: 243 or 260 ar

I would go with the 6.5 creedmoor, you can buy match ammo and reload the brass, as good as the 260 rem and kicks like a 243, mine does anyway.
hope this helps.

Re: 243 or 260 ar

.260 brass is not hard to find. rem and norma, nosler, lapua soon I hear, BUT I use win 7mm-08 ran through my FL die and WHAM, I have .260 brass. I would opt for it before the 6.5CM because I reload. It is a very good cartridge that is very similar to the 260 but since I have a .243 and a .308 I feel .260 is the better choice. I do not use the same brass for all but I could IF I had to. If your not going to reload then everyone will tell you 6.5CM but our local vendors carry .260 match grade ammo. Never shot any (after load development I have only shot 1 load as I feel that is the best way to master your firearm). Both cartridges will serve the same purpose equally. Good luck

Re: 243 or 260 ar

Sorry, I saw the 6.5CM post and thought thats what the question was. If the twist is right then the .243 is a bad little dude. I love both. If your staying within 600 yds then either will do fine. I prefer the .260 but I have both and don't see any problem with either. Good luck

Re: 243 or 260 ar

Easy choice 260 hands down, take 308 brass run it threw a 260 die = 260 brass. The only 243 I would personally own would be a 243ack improved, the 260 will last allot longer!

Re: 243 or 260 ar

I relaod for all my guns so no problem there. I enjoy the load development for each gun. The dpms 243 only comes in 1-10 twist so we couldn't use the 105amax or the 107 sierra. The 260 has a 1-8 twist.
Thanks for the responses.

Re: 243 or 260 ar

I would go 260 if you are talking the factory dpms uppers. Brass just get rem factory or I hear you can neck down 7mm-08 which is ~40cents per for winchester so same price as 243 give or take.

Tons of good 264 bullets out there too I load for 264 mag and would love to have a milder version of it in my AR.

If it's really that easy to neck it down my next bolt gun will be 260.

Re: 243 or 260 ar

I would stick with the 7mm-08 win brass necked down before I would neck down .308. I am having good results with mine. Not saying it doesn't work because it does. I just like to keep my brass movement to a minimum. If your were gonna neck down lapua brass, word on the streets is Lapua is going to start selling .260 brass. Good luck

Re: 243 or 260 ar

Looks like 7mm-08 brass is readily available and sounds alot easier than necking down 308. Plus I don't want to be using 308 brass for her 260(if thats what she gets)and my 308.

Re: 243 or 260 ar

Lapua does have 260 brass should be availible soon seen it at the SHOT show, necking down 308 to 260 is very easy and works fine, but if you have a 308 I wouldnt use 308 brass.

They have been selling the .260 lapua, I have seen it on the shelves for at least a year.

My vote is for .260.
You should also consider the 6.5 Grendel if you reload as well. It would be lighter, less recoil and can easily reach to 600. I have a 6.5 Grendel with a "24 barrel. I want a second with a 18", but on the other hand I also want a .260. I haven't decided which one will come first though (6.5 Grendel, or .260). I just purchased a SCAR17 so the next AR will have to wait a while for me.

But the place I saw the .260 Lapua had the box of 100 for $120..... Might be why it is still there.

Why is she seeking more from an AR over 223 within 600 yards? I am pretty sure handloaded 223/556 will go beyond 600 yards with the right set up. Why not just stick with the same gun?

If its because she wants to have an excuse to buy a new/bigger/better gun than by all means just go buy something else.
Just curious why she wants a different caliber for the same distance she will still be shooting.

Can't believe this came back to life after a couple years. After some researching he helped me decide on the .260. Has been a great gun and after some 2500-3000 rds down the tube it just got rebarreled with a jp rifles .260 barrel kit. When the .223 was the only rifle I had we rarely had a place to go shoot beyond 300 yards. Now there are more options and we've shot beyond 1000 yards and the right choice was made going .260. Have since added a .308 rem 700 in an AI chassis also. The .223 is now his for carbine classes etc. thanks for everyone's input.
