.243 Win

Re: .243 Win

I've shot as far as 1k with the 90grain Scenars (1:10 twist) though they didn't perform as well as I'd hoped (compared with a 6.5 x 284...). 900 yards seemed to be the furthest for good accuracy with my load (44gr RE17). On paper they should be good to 1200 yards and will be trying them at that shortly.

Re: .243 Win

Do you guys find anealing cases for 243 a must for Long range, Trying to get the 105g berger VLDs to shoot in my 24in 1 in 8 twist 243 barrel playing around with seating depth, Anyone Loading the VLDs with big jump to Lands and getting good results.

Re: .243 Win

I have a jump to my lands with the 105's and they shoot very well. I am loading right at mag length. They were very sensitive to seat. Adjust in .010 increments and you will find it.

Re: .243 Win

Would opting for high density powder charge with 105+ weight bullets with 243 win offer best acuracy for 1k+ distances, Presently finding good results with 46g single based Vihtavuori N160, ccibr, Lapua brass, 105g moly berger VLD, The high energy version of n160 which is N560 seems to yield less repeatable acuracy with same components for some reason with my 243.

I tried shooting at 1300Y and 1720Y with my 6x47L.115's at 3070 fps.At 1300 it wasn't very easy to hit a 14" wide plate in regular winds 5-10MPH.Maybe one out of 6-7 shots. In contrast I could hit it about half the time with my 30-375R.

At 1720 it was a total joke.I shot probably 20 rounds and never hit it.In contrast we could hit the same 3' plate quite often with 338L,30-375R and 375CT.

Re: .243 Win

115 Dtac and Ramshot Hunter to 1200 yards on rocks and stumps. I felt pretty good and the rifle and ammo seemed capable of more but that was the best we could do with the LRF we had. Tried some stuff that we guessed was about 1500 and it fell apart quickly.

Re: .243 Win

Has any one got any good groups from a 243 with a 1 in 9 twist 26 inch bbl with bullets over 100 grains????? My Remington 700 shoots the 95grain and down very well but cant get the larger bullets to stableize the 107's even key holed at 100 yards. Thanks for your help

Re: .243 Win

Have you tried the 105 AMAX? It usually works in that twist.

Re: .243 Win

Rob01, I did try the 105 Amax it didnt key hole at 100 but the best group I got out of it was about 1 3/4 inches I will go back and perhaps try it again with another powder and maybe change the primers up......

Re: .243 Win

How hard were you pushing the 105's? I got them to work but had to push them pretty hard w/ h4831, out of a 26" 1 in 9.125 barrel. Am currently .3 grns over a max load and am getting sub moa at 600. (have an 8 twist mcgowan on the way).

Re: .243 Win

Nelson has a point. Once you get near max weight for the twist sometimes it needs a little more velocity.

Stay safe but bumping up the powder charge might help.

Re: .243 Win

I was not pushing them that hard, and the preshure signs were not there either, I will go back and work up slowly and see what I get, a local guy here gets great groups with 105 Amax's and said he was getting almost 3100 out of them.... Not sure that I could go that high in my gun but I will go back and try.
Thank You guys for the info it makes sense

Re: .243 Win

Shot to 1300 and surprisingly accurate. H4350 and DTAC's. When you load up the rounds and hear the powder shaking around inside, you might think - how can this work so well, it just does

H1000 and a magnum primer can do the same if you can load COL long enough.

A 24" barrel will let you get decent velocity but 26"+ will ease the pressure.

Anything above an 8 twist I shoot 95 gr SMK's and turn the velocity up a bit, works well also. Even out of a 20" youth model Remmy.
