Has anyone ever built a .243 on a long action? I can get my hands on a Savage long action but wondered if there might be feeding problems using a long action for a .243 win.
Ideally I would like to use the standard short action but I can get the long action for a really good price and that would also allow me to use long action calibers in the future. Has anyone done this or do you guys forsee any problems?

Thanks in advance.

Re: .243 Winchester in a long action

There have been factory rifles produced with short action calibers on a long action. Tikka T3s are an example. I have a Winchester long action that originally was a .243 , but is a 280AI now. No problems with what you are wanting to do. The only issue may be the bolt stop being too short if your action was originally a long action caliber? I'm not too familiar how the Savage bolt stop is designed so this may need to be addressed as it was on my Winchester. Not a big deal for a competent gunsmith.

Thanks for all the info gentlemen. I'm in the process of purchasing a Savage long action already fitted with a douglas barrel and didn't want to pass up on a great deal. Without your guys help I may have had to.....Thanks a ton. I'll have to post some pics and pick you guys brains for stock ideas in the near future.

I would just go with a 6mm. </div></div>

I have a 223 varmint example of such. Is a single shot LA reciever and 223 got it from my FIL who purchased it new in CA some years back.

The 243 will work fine on a long action....

The Army has been feeding 7.62 in a Rem 700 Long action for years the only problem is when the round are not pushed to the rear in the magazine , other than that and the long cycle it's fine, plus like you said when you decide you can always go bigger
