Re: 260 lapua brass??

Re: 260 lapua brass??

I have Remington, Nosler and Norma 260 Brass. Out of that bunch, I'm having the best luck with Remington. I'll be ordering some Lapua brass. I'll let you know how it does.

Re: 260 lapua brass??

I made my second batch of 20 cases today from WW .243 brass. I ran 'em in the Forster .260 die, trimmed 'em back to the correct OAL, primed 'em, and loaded 'em up with H4350 and 123 grain Scenars.

What's the big deal? Am I missing something?

Re: 260 lapua brass??

Lapua makes nice brass, and lotsa folks buy it for lotsa reasons.

But anyone who's been holding off going with the .260 until Lapua gets off the dime is rather missing the point. The .260's been doing just dandy up 'til now without their participation, IMHO. The main thing that's going to happen once they arrive on the scene 'Johhny come lately' is that the .260 just got pricier.

IMHO, who needs 'em?

Yes you are, the target obviously because everyone knows you can't shoot accurately unless you are using Lapua brass!

Re: 260 lapua brass??

Hey Gang,

I received a coorespondance from Kevin Thomas, of Lapua USA, last week and the 260 brass is on the ship as we speak from Finland. Mike estimated that it should start hittig the shelves early April (about 3-4 weeks from now).

I know I'll be in line for some. I've had great success so far with Remington brass, but my job doesn't allow me ample time to check neck concentricity, sort cases, turn necks, etc., etc. I'd rather spend that time at the shooting range than in the reloading room. If one shoots enough the Lapua cases are actually a better investment in the long run (longer case life + less case prep).

If one has time for the extra case prep (if needed) for the Remington's and Nosler's (never used Norma- anyone want to chime in on?) then the Remington and Nosler's work fine.

Re: 260 lapua brass??

I just got done prepping 450 .260 brass, Rem brand.

I sized all brass to put the necks back into round, case trimmed to consistent length, chamfered mouths and deburred flash holes, basically ready to prime and load.

The first batch of 250 weighed in with an SD of .904 grains with six outlier pieces that fell outside my two grain window.

Second batch of 200 the SD increased to just over one grain (1.0something), but I had ZERO outliers for my two grain window.

Maybe I just got two exceptional batches, maybe Rem kicked up quality control?? I dont know.

What I do know, besides a little added intitial prep work on Rem brass, who needs obscenely inflated Lapua .260 brass!!! As long as Lapus is over TWICE the cost of Rem, I think ill stick with Rem.

I don't blame you - I would too. The beauty of the Lapua brass is in the eye of the beholder. If you have the time necessary to prep the Remington brass then that's great. I envy you. Unfortunatly my job doesn't allow much time at home, so I need to minimize time spent in the reloading room. It's more or less an act of redundancy to weight sort, or neck sort, Lapua brass. That alone saves hours on end. I'd rather be spending that extra time at the range throwing rounds into the X-ring.

I'm from central MN,and we're thinking of you all in Fargo. Looks like the flooding this spring could be catastrophic.

Re: 260 lapua brass??

I have used Remington brass and found it to much work and to boot I lost that tight feeling when seating my primers after 2-4 loads and on many occasions had gas leakage .
Maybe if you run Rem Brass without to much pressure it will last a little longer but Lapua is simply the bee's knees in my book .I currently use Norma Brass and have found it ok after sorting through to make groups of similar weights in the brass. Norma is giving me reasonable case life -10 firings before I turn it to 308 and stick in my Tigr

I believe Norma also produces the Nosler brass which a friend had hardness tested -he said the Nosler was harder than the Norma.Anyway the Norma seems to last a bit longer than the REM , I expect Lapua to give even better life -

I imagine Lapua is twice the price of Rem because it is made better with more love but we will see I guess in the very near future .

Re: 260 lapua brass??

Well, as Reagan said, "Trust..., but verify".

I value all your faith, but I do my own homework.

Any main advantage Lapua brass might provide to me is wasted by the simple fact that I will never again load a single case that I have not F/L resized first.

Once burned, forever shy. My mistake turned a 3 day weekend and a very long drive into something rather different than I had intended.

I do my own prep, and would do it with Lapua just as quick as I would with any other brand. It's just my process, period.

In this context, paying the extra buys me little.

To me, loose primer pockets before their reasonable demise simply tells me my load is too hot. This is one reason why I depend more on barrel length for velocity than on heavier charges. Short barrel fans have my support, but I do not imitate them. Yes, Rem runs softer, which is why I usually prefer Win. But I also run milder loads and retire my brass maybe earlier than most.

Love on the loose in the Lapua brass fabrication plant? Maybe...

Re: 260 lapua brass??

My point was, if the Lapua .260 was comparable in cost to say, the Lapua .308, I would probably still shoot it (I shoot all Lapua in my .308), and at $55-60/100, its a good deal. As was said, a little longer life, but mostly less prep work for that initial load on new brass and more consistent lots.

I just dont see it being $.92 a piece good. Especially when theres no more material cost in it than .308 brass. "Made better and with more love" has nothing to do with it. If it did, Lapua .308 brass would be twice as much as "cheaper" .308 brass, its not. Its just Lapua taking advantage of the .260 IMO.

If it were comparable in cost to the .308 brass, Id still shoot it.
If the Remington brass was absolutely horrendous (which it doesnt appear to be), id probably have to shell out the $.92/piece for Lapua.

Thank you for the thoughts!

We're gonna need some prayers I think. Over 60" of snow, and a LOT of moisture in it. Its gonna be a doozey. Their already building temporary clay dikes.

Sounds as if Lapua shipped all of their first batch on a boat to the US. We were supposed to get some in the UK in March but now that's been pushed back to mid April apparently! Grrr...

Regarding other brass vs Lapua, well you just have to say that Lapua is the 'gold standard'. Other brass can be made to perform as well but with trade off's. I'll use Lapua whenever possible just to eliminate hours of extra case prep and have confidence in its quality.

Durabilty is as important to me as the cost....is it more expensive if it lasts twice as long? My experience with Remington brass is it varies quite a bit from lot to lot as far as soft primer pockets. Kinda sucks when you have toss it after two firings...My best .260 brass has been necked up .243 Lapua. Next would be Nosler/Norma. I havent tried necking down WW 7/08.

Goose, we've had 96" of snow here this winter...gonna be lots of water running in about a month..
