260 Load Data Needed

Re: 260 Load Data Needed

The problem I have is that my Lyman manual goes up to 44gr max but when I enter in all the info on my Quickload program, it says that using 44gr of IMR 4350 put me at almost 15k psi over pressure.

I called Sierra and they said the Lyman manual had to be a typo and to start at 35 and work up to 40.6 max. I loaded some to 41 before I started this thread and my chrono read 2666 for the highest vel.

So who should I trust? Sierra, Quickload, or the Lyman manual.

Edit: Also. I was shooting at milk jugs at 300 yards with a 10mph cross wind and couldnt hit shit unless I held close to a foot or more to the right. The loads used were 38 and 38.5. Max velocity was 2492.

Re: 260 Load Data Needed

so much really depends on your barrel...watch for pressure signs and stressed brass....wear glasses and engage your rabbits foot....

....you are doing ok...when the groups go left and right....its seating depth.....

savvy the OAL guage to see where the ogive is in relation to the lands....sierras like to jump

Re: 260 Load Data Needed

I have been eyeing the Sinclair OAL gauge for some time now. I may have to purchase one.

I think I will use the Lyman manual and work up. With the load data from Sierra I am nowhere close to filling the case at max load.

They have no data for the 142 SMK and IMR 4350.

Thats usually the first place I go.

You're on the right track. 44 grains should be too much. I would work up in small increments to 42, maybe 43 grains. If you load 1 round each in .5 grains up to 44, you'll see where you hit pressure.

Re: 260 Load Data Needed

The I4350 data on Hodgdon's website does not appear to be test data, only calculated data from whatever version of "quickload-esque" software that they use.

I used H4350 load data to get started and worked my way up looking for pressures. The burn rates are very similar, I was in the same spot you are, 2lb's of H4350 on the shelf and 8lbs of I4350, it needs to be used...

Re: 260 Load Data Needed

Nah...I'll keep it. I think once I find the right load data it will shoot just fine. The burn rate is so close to H4350 that I dont believe it will make that much of a difference.

Here is the link with some pics of groups I have shot with the IMR 4350. About half way down the page. I believe the IMR will do fine as long as I can get velocity up a bit more.

Didn't know you needed it or last week I would have had a new 8lb jug to send ya!

For my 142 SMK and H4350 loads I use around 42 grains and get 2,700-2,750 fps. I would start at around 41 grains and work up, you most likely will find the "sweet spot" between 42.0 and 43.0 grains. Per above, just watch for pressure signs as you go. Having tried both H4350 and IMR 4350, I did not see a huge difference, but I had less deviation with the H4350 so I went that route.

My DPMS really likes the 142 SMKs, my Rem 700 actually likes the 139 Scenars a little better. If you have not tried the 139 Scenars, I would have to say give it a chance, very nice bullet.

Best of Luck,
M Richardson

PS: I played around with the OAL, but just run them at mag length (2.800) and get good results.

Also, Knob Creek has had H4350 in stock the last couple of times that I have been out there. Not sure how things look after the recent MG Shoot?

Re: 260 Load Data Needed

I never did get the 142s to shoot that great. The 139s shot great. I notice more when I step out to 600 and beyond. The 139s would group much tighter at 600 yards.

A powder that works great in the 260s is H4831SC or RL-17 if you can't find those powders.

I'm always needing powder! Just today picked up an 8# of IMR 4350.

I just got home from there. I've been itching to try some 178gr AMAX's and they had them. they still have H4350 in stock.

BTW Good to have ya over here Capt!

Re: 260 Load Data Needed

Hey chad, I am faced with a similar situation. My 260 just came in. I am using the 140 amax over R17(not the best choice but what could be had at the time) Anyway I loaded some 10 shot batches starting at 38, 38.5, 39, 39.5, 40, 40.5, 41, grains respectfully.

I am going to be wasting powder and bullets with the lower loads? should I start at 40grains?

I wish I would have know you were going. I am off and wanted to go shoot but decided not to.
