I'm in the process of turning my m700 into some sort of 6.5 short action. I've yet to order the 6.5 barrel, but im pretty set on .260. My question is, are there any bullets or powders that would suit better towards a load that will be forced to fit in an AI mag? (xlr chassis) I plan on running 140 or 142 amaxs in this rifle. 1-8" twist, most likely 24".

Also, would a 6.5cm or 6.5x47 be better suited for mag length loads?

Thanks guys

Re: .260 mag length questions

I run 139 Scenar's @ 2.900" but have to ditch the spacer in the AI mag's, do that and you can get dang close to 3" that will cover you for most everything. The 140 amax is a long bullet 1.375" I think you mean 142 Sierra's and they are the same, Scenar shorter. You may have a problem getting to the lands if you want to use a VLD bullet IF you use standard rental type reamer but your smith can get you reamer for any bullet your heart desires. 260 is kick ass now that Lapua has brass on the market, 1-8 and 24" is fine. I run a 26" and get 2810 fps no problem.

Re: .260 mag length questions

My gunsmiths reamer has the lead/freebore removed, he uses a throating reamer to custom set the freebore, my chamber started life with a 139 Scenar touching the lands with a ojive measurement of 2.150, as I recall the COAL was around 2.750, now after 3100 rounds my a 140 AMax .015 off the lands has a ojive length of 2..25 and plenty of room to grow before mag length is an issue. I am considering switching to the 6.5 CM, it seems like Hornady has stepped up production of there brass so availability is not an issue like in the past, and hands down the CM is an more accurate and efficient round compared to 260, it's all in the shoulder angle, 6.5x47 is an excellent round, but the shear cost of one piece of brass is more than a loaded 260 round with Win 7-08 brass CCi primer H4350 140 pill
