I've decided to do a tactical 260 Remington build. I have located a Rem 700, 308 action. I'll need a stock, mag and barrel, maybe a trigger, brake etc.

I'm ok on most of it, but I could use help on the barrel and chambering. I think a 1:8" twist is the way to go. Not sure about chambering depth or where to get my barrel or barrel length. Any help would be appreciated. I want it to shoot flatter and buck the wind better than my Rem 700 308 with a 26" barrel shooting 155 Lapua Scenars.

So mostly I need suggestions on my barrel. Any help out there?

Um, if you mean 1 in 8 twist you're pretty much on the money. What bullets do you want to shoot with it? And for a .260 a longer barrel is better. I think there's a sharper velocity decline with shorter .260 barrels than there are with shorter .308 barrels. If it were me I'd put a 24-26 inch barrel on it. That's my opinion. As for barrel makers, check out Krieger, Rock Creek, Hart, Brux, Satern, Bartlein, and any others I'm forgetting. As long as you buy from one of the top manufacturers you can't go wrong.

Yes, I made the change to 1:8 twist which is what I meant.

Anyone know what the go/nogo guage says for 260? What OAL are people loading the heavy bullets to? What is the magazine length limit? Any other issues I should know about?

Re: 260 Remington build

Your OAL will depend on your gun after it is built. I saw some guys today from 2.910 to 2.960. Everybody's is different. depending on what barrel you go with, you can run a 1:8 or 1:8.5 I have a 30" Bartlein with 1:8.5 with 5R rifling. The 5R rifling stabilizes the bullet better so you only need 1:8.5 . I run a 6.5 Creedmoor so they are almost identical to a 260 and I will tell you now that you will love the advantage over the .308. Since you want to go "tactical" you may stay in the 26" barrel length although 28-30 will give you an advantage at extra long range.

Re: 260 Remington build

You can't go wrong with a Kreiger ss in at least a light varmint contour. Shoot a 142 SMK or 139 Scenar at COL 2.8 to 2.9 and you wont have any mag issues. Pick your smith and he will be able to talk you through what you want.

Re: 260 Remington build

Well you said you need a mag, so if you get something like an AICS or Badger, etc.., it should fit any length 260 you have. If your going stock, I'm not sure what Remingtons mags fit, but my Savage factory mag fits my Bergers at 2.928" OAL.

Also, your OAL will vary/depend on which bullet you finally choose to shoot. Long VLD's (Berger 140, JLK 140, etc) will be longer than the Scenar, SMK, Amax. Only your chosen gunsmith knows which will probably work best unless you specify one over the others. It may turn out that to get those VLD's to the lands may be longer than mag-length. But the 139 Scenar and 142 SMK are going to be fine 95% of the time, and they are great bullets.
