Rem 5r, still shooting great. Planned on shooting until I noticed some performance degredation but heard that carbon can build up in the throat and wont come out or will cause erosion. Is this a concern?
Those that do not clean- when you finally saw the rifle performance degrade and cleaned, did you have this problem? Did the rifle shoot normally after a few foulers?
It has been great so far and this thing will still print tiny groups.

Just keep shooting it. Some users of Molly coated bullets had barrels go south due to molybdenum build-up in the throat. IMO, carbon buildup is a non issue.

I have had the dreaded.......... carbon/copper buildup between 500 to 1000 rounds velocities went way up and accuracy went to shit. Drastic cleaning measures restored most of the accuracy. Had about 4000 rounds on that barrel. After break-in I clean about every 500 on my 308's.

I use the foam bore cleaner, it does a great job on carbon and copper. On a Yugo AK sewer pipe barrel, the foam turned the buildup into a flowing river of what ever the buildup is. I let it set too long and it set back up on the flash hider. You can soften it up with foam again but I wanted to see if I could chip it off and it was set up like epoxy.
I like the foam bore cleaner, I hope it has no long term affects on a barrel. (Pic of a barrel that needs Viagra)

Keep shooting it, when you reach that limit you will know. I never had any carbon build up in the throad a little JB Bore paste wouldnt take out in a hurry. Not to turn this in to a "how to clean your rifle" thread, I use Wipe Out every 250-500, and the JB if there are any areas with excessive carbon fouling (generally in factory tubes).

I use Outer's Foaming Bore Cleaner, sometimes labelled with the additional monicker "Gunslick". Borescoping indicates it works very well with any needed deviation from label instructions.

My shooting sessions seldom reach 100 rounds even during matches, and I feel an obligation to get the bore clean afterward.

Before the foam, this was a chore. Now, it's so easy, it's pretty much a no-brainer.

I figure, if cleaning's so easy, why get wrapped up with rings 'n such? Yes, it takes a few rounds to reseason the bore, but so what? Foe match shooting, I need to shoot sighters and warm up the bore anyway, so there's really very little sacrifice involved.

Besides, in not cleaning, sure accuracy isn't such a really big issue; but my primary concern is pitting. I'd rather be sure.
