Guys I'm getting ready to build a custom 264 WinMag with a Broughton 5C 8 twist, and have one question for you. The ? would be how many rounds are you Guys getting/got before throat errosion. Don't matter if it's a custom or factory tube! Thanks in advance!

Re: 264 Winchester Magnum OWNERS ?

Awesome cartridge. Always wanted one but just went with a 7 STW. I would think 700 rds you would "start" seeing errosion. But I'm not an owner.

Re: 264 Winchester Magnum OWNERS ?

It depends on how you use it. Deer hunting - a life time; varmint hunting or F-Class every weekend not long. How hot you get the barrel and your cleaning regiment will determine life. Cool cartridge.

Re: 264 Winchester Magnum OWNERS ?

At one time I did a great deal of shooting with various 7mm magnums. Barrel life was always less than 1000 rds. No rapid fire strings etc. I am guessing 750 for the .264 Win.

Re: 264 Winchester Magnum OWNERS ?

I own four rifles chambered for this outstanding caliber. I use them mostly for deer hunting and some long range plinking. So none of my rifles gets shot rapidly or to the point where the barrels are excessively hot. I feel that I can get 1,000 rounds out of my barrels with this kind of use.
I don't reload, so the only drawback to the .264 for me is that factory ammo is available only in 100 grain (for varmints) or 140 grain bullet weights.

Re: 264 Winchester Magnum OWNERS ?

I own a 264 Win Mag. It's a model 70 no less, my dad bought it before he died. It has had the barrel set back a turn and rechambered once, I don't know how many rounds it had thrown downrange at that point as it was bought before I was born in '83. I know I have about 800 through it after the set back, and I need a new barrel. I'd say get you a 1:9 twist barrel, mine has shot great.

Re: 264 Winchester Magnum OWNERS ?

There is a gentlemen named Matt that happens to be a hell of a fan of the 264 win mag. I have personally seen him shoot one in a few shoots with the 140 vlds and do very well. I watched him shoot on the firing line next to a 300 win mag shooting 190 vlds and it looked like a laser beam!!

Talk to him yourself http://www.parrycustomgun.com/

Re: 264 Winchester Magnum OWNERS ?

i own just one, i think everyone covered the round count . but i would go 1/8 twist the berger vld recommends 1/8 and they are great for those long bombs that the 264 is great at

Re: 264 Winchester Magnum OWNERS ?

You guys are AWESOME, this rifle will ONLY be used for hunting basically powerlines, cutovers, and bean fields. As per zeroing and load development I generally have a fan rotating on the barrel and shoot approx. every 2-4 min(timed). 140 grn VLD's and Retumbo will be the start. Will get with Parry's CrossC...........thanks again Guys. Anyone else can chime in as well I'm VERY excited about getting this dude built.........my first 6.5 cal rifle!!!!!!!!

Place order for replacement barrel now! 6.5 are addicting.

Good luck

Re: 264 Winchester Magnum OWNERS ?

The 264 WM is a great long range and fast round. The throat will start eroding pretty fast, depending on how fast and how quick you shoot. I've seen 300WM throats wear .020" from a weekend shooting match of about 120 rounds. You should see similar results with this caliber.

Let me know if anyone needs any custom 264 WM ammo. I've loaded several different bullets for this round. The factory selection is very poor.

Re: 264 Winchester Magnum OWNERS ?

I've got about 600 rounds through my sendero an haven't noticed any erosion. I load to just off the lands and haven't had to adjust my seating depths yet.

The new Nosler reloading book notes that when they were going through loads for the update barrel life was significantly longer than they expected due to the improvements in barrel steel.

Re: 264 Winchester Magnum OWNERS ?

I would say 700 to 1000 rounds would sound about right. Mine has around 650 through her and the throut is getting long and worn out, but still shoots plenty good. She's a 700 Sendero restocked. I really love the caliber. I took this elk with 140 SST's at 645 yards. She realy roars but the recoil is so mild. A pleasure to shoot.

</div></div>NICE Jamie WOW! When you say "plenty good" what is that group wise?

Re: 264 Winchester Magnum OWNERS ?

26" barrel and the rifle loves them shoots sub MOA at 200 meters. I'm planning on taking it to the gunsmith this week to get the throat reamed as it's far too short for these bullets.

Re: 264 Winchester Magnum OWNERS ?

Thanks,
It would shoot the 140 A-max around an inch at 300 yards and did so for about 4 years. It now will still shoot around .5 to .75 at 100 but is slowly opening up. It's a factory barrel and I don't think they hold up as well or as long as customs.

Coldbore,
We left it in the alder brush until first light, some think a mountain lion.
