I believe that ChadTRG42 has shot his in excess of 1000yd with the 140 or 150 Berger and had excellent results.

A group of us tried it and couldn't get there reliably. I wouldn't put too much time into it, go with a 6.5 .260 or 7mm

Great hunter, go .280 or .30-'06 for LR target work. For the short action, the above advice is right on.

BTDT with trying to go long with the 270
Things were OK to 500 or so and then began to fall apart at 6-700. The bullet selection in 270 for long range use just isn't there IMO.
As stated before--Stick with the 6.5 /7mm / .308 match bullets.

I have heard the same advice on a 270. The VLDs make it tempting but I haven't heard many success stories on consistent long range load development. Everyone seems to say the 130 grain projectiles are best in their rifles and unfortunately there are to many other options to consider using the 130s at long distance. IMO stick with the 270 for a medium to big game hunting rifle at close to medium distance. There is a sticky thread for caliber selection in the bolt action rifle section. Check it out. A lot of useful information!

I keep on meaning to try mine out past 500 but always end up falling back on the 30 cals. Theoretically the 135 SMK's should be fine out to 1000, the 150 Bergers however do seem a better proposition. While many people were hoping to see higher BCs from Bergers .277 bullets, Berger knew they would sell more bullets to all the 1:10 twist rifles out there. With that said the 150gr Berger with a .531 BC driven at 2800 fps will handily beat the common .308 load of 175 smk @2650 that most everyone tout as very 1000 yd capable. My current DA is 8200 and that means this load doesnt go subsonic until 1570 yards which leaves plenty of room for 1000 yd stability even at sea level. My plain jane .270 win hunting rifle is holding under 1" at 300 with less than 1/2" of vertical. I will stretch its legs out soon in preparation for an upcoming mule deer hunt. I say get some bergers and see how they work for you.

In fact, according to JBM even a lowly 130 Hornady spirepoint at 3000 fps @SEA LEVEL can make it almost 1100 yards supersonic. The point is that bullet does not know what cartridge it came from. It only knows its BC, its velocity and where its pointed. Assuming it came from an accurate barrel, predicting where its going to hit is just math and wind.
If you own a 270 that you can shoot under an inch by all means go shoot it as far as you can as often as you can. Some quality reloads with 150sst's or 150BT's will definitely help your cause and your vertical, but go have some fun.
If you thinking of buying a rifle there are better choices out there, which others have already noted

I forgot, but you can download the berger bullets ballistic computer for free I believe. Google it and find out. Then you can play with atmospherics. I don't know anything about the Berger though because I have never used it

Yesterday I was chronographing the 270s:
150 gr VLD 3050 fps average 55 gr Re17
130 gr VLD about the same velocity with 55.8 gr H414
The featherweight rifle shoots the 130 gr better.

When I first got into LR shooting, I took the Prec Rifle course at Tac Pro with my Howa 1500 in 270 Win. I wanted to learn ballistics and do my research on rifles/calibers before I bought a high end rifle and scope. The 270 did great. I had worked up a good 3/4 MOA load with the 135 SMK, and ran that at 2990 fps. It worked perfect and shot great out to about 800 yards. The rifle limited me when the barrel got hot, so at 900 and 1K groups opened up. But on a cold/warm bore, it would be ok. I have since free floated and bedded it, and it shoots even better now. It wears a Zeiss Conquest 3-10x44 scope and shoots the 130 SST's right at 1/2 MOA at 3198 fps.
The 270 shoots flatter and drifts less than a 308 Win. So, it's more than capable. But you have to know the ballistics and be capable as a shooter to apply it. The top bullets will be the Berger VLD's (130, 140 or 150), Sierra MK, and the Hornady SST's. I prefer the 130 SST's, since I use my 270 for hunting, and the BC is still pretty good. Most people will use the 270 for hunting, which your average shot will be under 300 yards. So fast and flat is my goal, and can still take the long shots if needed. But if all you had was a 270 and wanted it for long range shooting, the 150 grain bullets with the highest BC would be the way to go. But, there are much better caliber options than a 270 for long range shooting. Anything in 6.5mm (.264) or 7mm (.284) would be a better choice for higher BC bullets.

Ok good I am glad I found this thread. A buddy of mine just got a 270 Vanguard given to him by his boss. He wanted to get out and shoot with me (when I can find somewhere to shoot LR around here). I started looking into the selection a little more and thoughts were the 135 SMK (0.488), with the Barnes 130 TSX (0.431) for a hunting load pushed around the same speeds as the 135. Longest shot on a deer in MI will probably be around 500 with most in the 1-300 range. Or of course just shoot the 150 Berger VLD (0.531) for both paper and hunting.

If you were a highly paid consulting engineer and you saw that data in your profession, you might present your concerns differently by asking questions until you understood more.
"Aren't you concerned with the reliability of the guns and ammo at that pressure?"
That way you could learn what you are up against before you make any statements that might later turn out to be incorrect, which could lower your credibility and income.

That way you could learn what you are up against before you make any statements that might later turn out to be incorrect, which could lower your credibility and income.

In practice I could not get the runout on reloads consistent enough to give decent groups. When I picked low runout bullets and shot then I got good groups and ok long range results but the percentages were poor.
So I stopped playing about with it, stuck to the 308 and eventually sold the 270

We were shooting at steel plates over the weekend, intially to 650 yards and then at 860 yards.
650 was easy with a light head on wind with my Sako 75 Finnlight .270 with a standard (i.e. 20 7/8") barrel.
Was shooting 150gn Hornady SSTs (BC .525) with Aussie made ADI 2213sc powder - 57.5gns, FC brass full sized and Fed match primers.
I only had a Leupold VX2 3-9x40 on the optilocks, so elevation beyond 650 was limited. This is a factory spec hunting rifle, so 650 yards is easy given the right conditions.
Beyond that, was the realm of the .338LM and 300RUMs with Nightforce scopes etc that others had.

Nosler just came out with the Accubond Long-Range series, with a listed BC of .625 for the .277 150gr. We'll see if that pans out at distance I guess.
I was raised on the .270 Winchester, and have a soft place for it as a result, even though my .260 Rem and 6.5 Grendel have occupied the majority of my long-range shooting, in addition to .338 LM, 7mm WSM, etc.
