I got to see one perform yesterday. It was a Kimber 8400 Montana. He is a hunter so the rifle was built for a light packing rifle. He shot at 600 yards and the rifle did really well on the steel. My dad and I where spotting for him, at the same time we both say. "Look there is a rabbit right under the 600 yard target. He found it and shot. The round landed about 3inches low. Anyway my question is how would this caliber do as a hunting/target round? I am thinking a rifle for hunting and steel. Maybe around 13lb's give or take.

Thanks,

Rhett

Re: 270 WSM

All of the short mags are good hunters in my book, and for taget as well. The .270 cal is great but you would need to stock up on bullets as there is not a good selection. .30 cal selection would be best I would think. But if it were me I would go 7mmWSM or 300 WSM. But thats me. You can't go wrong with any of them for hunting.

Re: 270 WSM

I will agree that the bullet selection for .270 WSM compared to .30 Cal is not as varied. However, I guess it just depends on what your application is and what you are looking to do with it. I have a Tikka T3 which purpose is primarily for hunting medium/large game and for general medium range target shooting (200-400yrds, 600yrd on REALLY good days). I primarily use a hornady 130gr SST but I have also had good results with the 140gr nosler accubonds. They have worked great and carry very well at long distances. If your looking to do some long/extreme range shooting I’d probably go with a .300 Winchester Magnum. For me its overkill and I'm a 1 rifle, 1 load kind of guy. I'd shoot ANY big game animal in North America with my rifle, excluding Grizzly of course. All my rifles will pull double or triple duty if need be.

My two cents,

Huntinaz,

Although bullet selection is limited in 270 caliber, as compared to 7mm and 308's, the Berger match hunting 150 gr VLD is no slouch. With G1 BC of 0.531 and a G7 of 0.272 that bullet is not just plodding along.

Using JBM and Litz's G7 formula, started at a modest @ 3100 FPS, the 270 WSM yields 1k drops of 7.3 Mils (261.1") and windage of 2.1 mils (73.8").

Those are pretty fair numbers I'd say....

Re: 270 WSM

I fire 150gr Nosler Ballistic Tip BT's, and 150gr Sierra GameKing Spitzer BT'S out of my 270WSM at around 2900fps.

Bullet: 150gr Nosler BT/BT
Primer: FED GM215M
Case: Winchester Brass
Powder: 57.3rg IMR 7828ssc
COAL: 2.865
V: 2950fps

This is what I had been firing out of a stock Win M70. Here is a link of the results: http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showpic&id=4784 The messurements, I took myself, are wrong. I forgot to subtract the .277 bullet diameter.
I have since set out the barreled actions to Hart Barrels http://www.hartbarrels.com/ to be rebarrelled in a Krieger #10 MTU contour. It will be a shooter.

You have to see what works for you, and go with it.

Re: 270 WSM

The guy that had the .270 WSM was shooting 140gr Accubonds at around 3280fps (I think). What do you guys think the barrel life would be on one of these? Say with a MTU or Varmint contour barrel?

I would like a WSM down the road. The first thing I was looking at was 7 WSM. But after seeing the 270 WSM perform out of a light hunting rifle I thought it was worth asking about.

Thanks,

Rhett

The barrel life should be the same as any other rifle. Barrel life matters on how you care for and maintenance your firearm. Where you live and how you store your firearms will also add to there life. If you live in a hot, humid, and salty air climate you will have to take better care of your firearms then if you live in a cool dry climate. I could just throw out a number from a book like 10,000 rounds or better, but that wouldn't be 100% truthful. To tell you the real truth, no one really knows that actual barrel life until the barrel loses so much accuracy that it isn't worth firing. The "Facts" from books are only a reneral guide.

Hope this helps,
Hugo

Re: 270 WSM

...there is certainly some truth there...

...back in the day we had no Idea just how "bad" our barrels were...

...if it still shot 1/2 minute of woodchuck at 400 yds or so we had nothing to gripe about...

...by this standard the (BAR) barrel on a (bolt action FN Mauser) 30/06 has lasted over 20,000 rounds and is still going...
