Hunting & Fishing 270win on NM elk

Re: 270win on NM elk

What's the max PBR listed in JBM? My gut reaction would be to have it so that a 250y zero is achieved, it should be within 4" at 350 and 2" at 100y.

If the kid can't zero his own rifle, he shouldn't even consider shooting beyond those ranges.

1.5" to 2" high at 100 yards is fine out to 250-300 yards. But this is a bad recipe already starting. What good does it do him for someone else to sight in his gun if he can't. You may get a slight POI shift between the two of you. If you sight it in, then he needs to shoot it to verify the zero.

Exactly. If this is the case, then 100, maybe 200 yards is the max distance it should be used, and a dead on 100 yard zero would be best.

+1 take the kid out and get him to sight in the rifle. Help him as much as possible, but let him do the shooting.

IMHO sounds like range time is sorely needed.

Good luck

I know what is the right thing to do. But, trying to tell this guy is like talking to a wall. He is one of those guys that says" If I can hit a paper plate at 100 I'm good." Thanks for the advice and info. I will try to explain the above advice to him.

Then zero it at 100, and don't let him shoot past 100 yards. He owes it at least to the animal he plans to take. Spending the cash and valuable time to go and wound an elk is not what it's about. I see it every year and hear stories about it. Hunters assume their zero from last year is still good and don't shoot their rifle in before they hunt and miss or wound a deer. Then sight in their rifle. It sucks!
