280 opinions?

there's used 280 that i'm looking at, but don't know a whole lot about the round. i know it's a necked down 30-06, but that's about it. i'd be using it as primarily a hunting rifle, capable of long shots if needed. but i'd like to be able to take it to the bench and stretch it out for fun from time to time.

what kind of barrel life should it have? what about how picky rifles are as far as figuring out what rounds they like? any other opinions?

Don't know about this particular rifle, but the round is a keeper. You'll be happy w/ it for a hunting round. I have it in AI, and it's a laser, but the standard round is as accurate from what I can gather and the 7mm bullets are super. The 140 or 160 Accubonds are like the hammer of god. Good luck.

I agree with Weasethis,

I've had 2x280AI's and they were awesome. My next venture down 7mm path will be a straight 280 Rem, i found it was just as accurate forming AI cases as in the formed version
The 280 shines with 140-168 bullets can also drive the 180's too

I'm not sure of barrel life guess 3000+ depending on how you treat it. I haven't shot a barrel out yet!!
I didn't find it fussy to load for, had good results with RL-22 and RL-25 for the heavier bullets

Great round
Better BC bullets than it's closest rival the 270
I have a 280AI and love it
I run 140 Accubonds with a slow burning powder like H4831 or Reloader 22 and to me it has more of a push recoil than a 270 130g load in a similarly weighted rifle.

In all honesty a 140 going 100-200 FPS slower won't make any difference to a deer ..

outstanding caliber, a 7mm bullet in a 30-06 size case, what is not to love.
