Well I've been thinking of switching from 7mm-08 to 284 win. I could ream my current barrel and rechamber is to 284 win. My plan is using a long action with 284 setup. I was wondering what your thoughts are using a 24" barrel with the 284 win and 168 vld's. I would like to see around 2850 fps plus with 168's using hodgdon powder. Not much of a fan of RL-17.Curious if anyone running a barrel under 26".

My current 7mm-08 168 load is getting around 2740fps. Looking to reach a 1K with a little more speed and energy without going magnum. Keep in mind i do plan to carry the rifle in the field.

I think you would be in the ballpark of 2850. I know that Jared at APA runs a .284 with a 24" barrel. His go to load is a 162 Amax around 2860 with H powder, if I remember correctly. You should call him, I'm sure he would give you good advice.

I agree. The 284 is a modest performance improvement over 708; I think it's hardly worth rechambering and tooling up (and brassing up) for.

If you were starting from scratch, sure. If you were starting with a 308, sure. Starting with 7-08 though, your performance boost will be pretty small. I think your boost would be much better achieved with a 7RSAUM or 7WSM.

I know you've currently got a 473 bolt, and that's the attraction. Save your money for now and use up your 708. Later, build a high capacity 7.

Turbo,

You have a good point their.I would see what maybe 100 fps increase with 284 win. I was also thinking maybe 7saum or 7wsm. Not much to choose from with 7saum brass. 7 wsm is a little more popular plus if I wanted to move up to 180's I should have no problem.

Re: 284 win 24" barrel

Years ago I shot and chronographed a Rem.700 varmint originally a 7mm-08 that was rechambered to .284win. It had a 24" barrel.

The loads where on the upper end but we did push 168 Sierra Match bullets 2800fps. and we loaded H4831. Have the load data at home still.

Don't count the .284win. out. Although you get say 100-150fps. less velocity vs. the mags you do get double the barrel life.

My F-class gun is in .284win.

i am not sure about the 168's but i found there is still velocity to be gained even after 27" with 175's. i gained 100 fps going from a 27" barrel to a 31". i would suspect an even greater gain/loss with changes in shorter length barrels.

284 IS a fantastic cartridge, and bears consideration...but when you've already got a 7-08, and you're considering retooling and brassing up for a new cartridge, do you want to make such a small step?

OP: You could eek out a little more juice by converting to 7-08AI...? Would only require a new die, and your current brass would work. Again though, if you'll have to ship your rifle out and pay someone to do the work, you'll be spending a couple hundred for a marginal gain. Just a thought.

I've got 46 rounds thru my 284 now. I'm already second guessing and thinking maybe I oughtta have done the 7rsaum. I'm getting 2950 with 162amax thru a 26" barrel, which is pretty great...but velocity is addictive, what can I say?

When I started my project, I reasoned the 150-200fps wasn't worth the barrel life trade off. I guess I still think thats true, but the 180-class bullets at 3000+ sure sound NICE!!! It's about as close to a laser beam as you can get with a "reasonable" cartridge.

Oh well. I'm tooled up, and have heaps of brass for 284, so I'm in it for the long haul.
