I'm looking ahead to re-barreling my GAP Hospitaller in my sig.
Seems to me that .260 would be the choice since it is a short action. My problem is that I don't want a rifle classified as a "paper puncher". While I know that I wouldn't be taking full advantage of the .284s potential, would it run with the .260, with better terminal ballistics, in the short action? I could use Alpha mag type 2 with OAL of 2.985 I think, and notch the feed ramp. This would feed from mag for most shooting, and I could always single feed for very long range if I wanted. If the .284, in a short action, will run with a .260 with better terminal ballistics, then it seems like a win to me.

I know I'd be way ahead of the .308, and I have a barnd new Rem. 5R sitting in my safe to fill the .308 need.

Opinions?

Thanks

Re: >284 Win.

I know nothing of the 284's capabilities...but the 260 "just a paper puncher"?

A 142gr SMK @ 2750fps has more energy 400yd and beyond than the M118LR used by our armed forces...and has a higher sectional density to boot.

What he said.........

Further, it is your needs and applications that should drive the cartridge selection, not fashion. What are you trying to accomplish????

The 284 Win, even in a short action, is a very potent round. However, potency comes at a cost. In barrel life, recoil, and magazine capacity. Brass availability can also be an issue, as Winchester makes runs only a few times yearly, though Lapua 6.5-284 brass can also be utilized.

None of this says you should not build a .284 Win. It's just that feeding it, requires a bit more thought and planning, than say a 260 Rem or 7mm-08.

Best of luck,

Bob

Re: >284 Win.

I went through the same thought process as you a while back thinking about the details of my 284 build. I read through/watched teh video on the post Bohem gave you. Seekins makes a WSM bottom metal you can use to get a OAL of 3.14 but when I talked so to some the action manufacturers (Stiller, Big Horn, Surgeon) they also warned that sometimes the action needs to be modified which they did not recommend. For me it was a new build so I decided to just go LA and void the SA tweaks. If GAP built the rifle you have now I would give them a call and see what their thoughts are on all that might need to be done too.

My 2 cents

Re: >284 Win.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm really trying to have everything, more so than to impress anybody but myself. I shouldn't have called the .260 Rem a paperpuncher, but I just have read that the terminal ballistics of the .284 Win are substantial. I have to read the link that was provided above, and thank you for that. I hope that it will answer my original question of will the .284, in a short action, run with the .260, and provide better terminal ballistics.

Thanks again

Re: >284 Win.

Thanks for that link bohem, that was a good read especially since he used my same action and DBM system. If I were to do this build as new, it would of course be on a long action, but it still looks pretty interesting on the short action that I have.

Re: >284 Win.

If your looking to have a 284 in a short action, I'm running just that. had a reamer made for a 284 Shehane in a wsm alpha mag. works great. 2970 fps with the 162 Amax. no feeding issues but you do have to tweek the ears on the mag
