Gunsmithing 3/4-20 to 5/8-24?

Can a barrel that is pre-threaded at 3/4-20 be re-threaded at 5/8-24 without cutting the barrel back. New threads over the old? Barrel is at the minimum length as is.

You have .125 to work with so I see no reason why you cannot! Can't remember thread depth off the top of my head for 3/4" but guessing no more than .055 or so to clean off old threads.

your good to go. What what your barrel threaded for that was 3/4x20? i have never seen anything threaded with that before

Not sure what he has but I know Barrett uses the 3/4 x 20

Thanks for the fast answers! The rifle in question is a PGW Coyote in .308 with the folding chassis and extras.

I just had this very thing done to my DTA .260 barrell.

If the current threads are cut with a sharp v just divide 1.732 by the tpi to find the double depth of threads.

1.732/20= .087" .750-.087= .663" max diameter after threads are cut off. If they are standard thread form use 1.299.
