Hi, I am planning to buy a Beretta tikka t3 lite in .308 and still trying to figure out what scope I should get. I really want to stay in the leupold selection and their vx3. I want to be able to shoot deer and targets probably out to 500-650 yards out, and was wondering if the 3.5-10x50 is a good scope for that range. At that range, should I be using something of less magnification?

First, I wouldn't choose that scope for shooting where you need to dial. To get knobs you can dial well you have to send it in for turrets to be installed and ideally you'd want to get a decent reticle at the same time. You'll be left with a scope with mixed knobs and reticle that is still less than ideal. I also wouldn't choose a 50mm objective for that rifle as it's going to sit way too high. A 40mm with 10x or less leaves you with a 4mm exit pupil which is plenty.

There are much better choices than leupold in the same price range too. My money would likely go to a SWFA 3-15 for your purposes but a bushnell elite tactical 3-12x44 would do nicely as well. If you can spend a little more cash it doesn't get any better better than a 2.5-10 NF for a hunting rifle.

I have this scope mounted on a Winchester pre '64 in 30.06. It is an excellent scope but my shots are 200yd max. The 50mm objective sure gathers a lot of light and extends twilight shooting a bit. But 500 to 600 yds? I just don't know about that one.

I'd say you don't need less magnification and 10 power for the longer ranges you mentioned is adequate , I have this same scope mounted on my 300 WM and have taken Deer and Elk at those ranges but most were around 250 to 350 yards . My scope only has the Duplex reticle so shooting at longer range requires knowing your ballistic drop of your setup . I'm planning on mounting a tactical scope on my rifle in the near future and will sell my vari-x III soon . pm me if you are interested ?

Vx3 are nice hunting scopes and sit nicely on a Tikka. I have the leupold vxr ont my Tikkas as the dot works great for close mpbr shots and the cds dial for further shots. I have 3-9x40 for my 7mm Mag and it's plenty for 500y. The 30-06 wears a 2-7 for a wide field of view in the mountains. I am content with image quality for the price. On last thing about scopes with large windage knobs , the tikka has a narrow eject port and a large windage knob can cause the brass to bounce back into the chamber.
