Im looking at building another lightweight truck gun and want a very short barrel, I have a long action 270 win to build off of. I was wondering what you guys would recommend for a rifle for deer and elk with either a 20" or an 18" barrel, I have a 30 cal barrel laying around and plan on using it. So i was thinking either 30/06 or 308? If it was your build and had those choices which way would you go?

I'd go 308.

I have a 20" 30-06. It has fairly obnoxious muzzle blast with a plussed-up handload, I wouldn't want it any shorter.

308 would be my choice it works a little better int he shorter barrels.

i was wondering about the blast from the 06 with an 18" and if i could get powder to even burn fast enough. I think i will end up going 308 as then i could have my long action 308 and be able to run some big pills in it. The barrels i have are a 1-10, 1-12, and a 1-8 schneider but its a #8 contour

sooooo heavy, the 1-10 and 1-12 are varmint contours.

30-06!!! I have an older Rem 7600 Carbine in 30-06. It has an 18"-barrel. If there is hair in the scope you won't notice the muzzle blast or recoil. And the 30-06 will get you to the heavier bullets if you want them. The 18"-barrel makes it very handy in the truck or in the woods.

don't think your gonna gain any thing over 308 with an 18" barrel but since it's gonna be long action anyways go 30-06.
