Range Report 30.06 Ackley Improved

Well, I just got my 30.06 back from the gunsmith. I had it re-barrelled with a 32" Krieger barrel, chambered in 30.06 Ackley Improved. It is a Rem 700 action, mounted in a HS Precision stock that I took off my Rem 700P-338LM when I bought a chassis for that.

I took it to the range without a scope, as I hadn't gotten home to get the scope yet. I shot 50 rounds of old hand loads that I had made before the rebarrel, and in this way got some brass fire-formed. It was kinda cool being able to watch the bullet impact the berm seemingly just off the end of the barrel. Recoil is minimal now, and I didn't have issues with the rifle hopping like it used to----I know, I need to work on recoil management, but that will be easier now that there isn't as much to manage. I made up 50 rounds of ammo in fire-formed brass, and made up 50 rounds in my new Lapua brass to form.

We are headed to the Mifflin County 1000 yd range tomorrow, and I shall get it sighted in and try it out. I will save a few rounds to shoot at 1000 yards, as I am sure they will reach there. I did up some 230gr Berger Hybrids with 56.9gr Reloader 22 for a yield of 2645FPS---that should be a good OBT node for this barrel.

I'll report back with details of the shoot and a few pics of the rifle after the weekend.

Pics of range cards

Wife and I could not use the 1000 yd range, sadly, as there were events all weekend. We id use a 100 yd range, and got some range card pics.

We shot some at the 500 yard range, but the wind was so gusty and fickle, that we settled for banging steel at 500yds. Most of the shots on the steel ended up in the top right quadrant, in a rough group of about 5"x5", so I am quite pleased for 530 yards, and wild winds.
I chronographed the loads, got decent SD's--averaging about 12FPS. The SD's dropped considerably if I waited about 1 minute between shots. Apparently, this rifle loses velocity with sustained rapid fire. Velocities started in the 2780's and dropped into the high 2760's by the fifth shot, and then rebounded when I pulled the mag, reloaded it, and started to shoot again. When I paused about a minute between each shot, the Velocities stayed in the 2780's and very high 2770's. This is with a 230gr Berger pushed by RL-22 at 56.9 gr.

In fire-forming some new Lapua Brass, I shot some 208gr Hornady A-maxes pushed by RL-22 at 57 gr. I shot through a 3/4" steel plate. The first shot made a hole over 1/2" deep, perfectly round, and about 5/8" diameter, with a nice rounded bottom. The second shot of course went right through. I had a group with three adjacent holes through the plate, touching, and then heard several shots pass through the hole and impact the bank behind. Kinda cool. This was at 125 yards.

Will need to do more load development, but I think I have gotten close to my objective. I know I can get more velocity out of these without pressure signs, but this seems to be where my OBT node should be. I have very low peak pressures---about 53K. When I calculate for the next node, the pressures show over 60K, so I haven't gone there.
From the chart below, you can see that this rifle should shoot about 1500 yards before transonic with this round. I have high hopes for it.
