I just started reloading 30-06 and shooting factory 150gr core lockt ammo i found when i deprimmed and went to gauge the cases that there was no excess to trim unlike my 260 Remington and i know its not the case length gauge or could it be that it just isn't burning hot enough to need trimming?

Re: 30-06 reloading ?

its more of a question if anyone has run into a case where the neck on a non-mag rifle caliber needs absolutely no trimming and the case length is perfect once fired?

Re: 30-06 reloading ?

4 out of 4 on 30-06 and i even cycled the deprimed cases through the rifle fine, but the 260 on the other hand is always needing trimmed maybe after i shoot one of my hot 30-06 reloads the neck will need trimmed.

Re: 30-06 reloading ?

im just wondering because they were Remington factory ammo and none of the cases so far have needed trimming which is odd because even after i shot my 260 the cases from the factory ammo needed trimming. If it helps I am using the stock lee trim kit with the corresponding case length gauge.

Re: 30-06 reloading ?

If you still have one of the factory loaded rounds pull the bullet and measure the brass, maybe you had some brass that was a little short from the factory, that way it may have grown but not enough to need trimming. I’m also curious when you say it did not need trimming, is that because it was under the SAAMI min trim to length or under the SAAMI max length? If the brass was shorter than the trim to length I would bet that your brass was short to begin with. If it simply is not yet at the SAAMI max length I say reload and shoot a couple it more times and then you will need to trim the brass.

I got the first shot and two reloading through my factory Federal brass before it reached the max length and needed to be trimmed.

Re: 30-06 reloading ?

The FC .223 brass after fired (from my AR's) and FL sized comes out to 1.748" - which is .002" under the minimum spec trim to length. (trim to is 1.750"-1.760")

So yea, sounds normal - and isn't surprising.

If you are anal about case length - find the shortest case, and trim all others to that same length so they are all consistent.

Re: 30-06 reloading ?

I frequently run into once fired, sometimes several times fired, brass that needs no trimming. I measure and only trim when needed. I wouldn't measure performance or think that something was wrong based on a need to trim.

Re: 30-06 reloading ?

How much you need to trim can depend on several things

how long the case was originally

your rifle's chamber dimensions

how you set the resizing die up

even how you lube the die/case mouth/expander ball

If I was trimming more than every 3 or 4 reloads I'd be trying to figure out why. Oh, I hardly ever trim - just on the initial loading of brass new to me for the most part.

Except with the 50bmg!

Re: 30-06 reloading ?

I reload my accuracy rounds from Hornady brass and it holds its length very well. In fact I have some cases that started life as factory rounds and after 8-10 reloads it is just as it was when I started.

I have found remington brass to be a good case to build your normal plink around stuff out of. I use it when the guys get together and want to just shoot random things out on the property. They don't get the previlage to use the good stuff
