There are plenty of excuses why I have had this rifle for several months now and really haven't shot it much, none of them are very good excuses. I finally have the load I plan to use. I say finally but it really didn't take too long.

The first loads I tried were with H4350, 208AMax and 175SMKs, Lapua brass and BR-2 primers. There was only one real stand out group so I moved on to H4831SC. It was too dark to chronograph due to a T-Storm skirting the range so no numbers.

I had the chance to shoot my H4831SC loads last Saturday working with 180SMK's, Lapua brass, and BR-2 primers and using fireformed brass. I had 2 loads that stood out by the numbers. At 57.5gr I had 2710fps av with ES of 17 and SD of 7.02 then again at 59.5gr I had 2705fps av with ES of 8 and a SD of 3.16. The groups were .417" and .506" repectively. I did not take pics as It got too dark. I ran a couple loads accross the chrony with 190SMKs but a couple shots at each step in the ladder told my they were not the numbers I was expecting and certainly didn't come close to what I had already seen from the 180's.

Today I revisited that magic load with some different brass and different components to put it to a torture test of sorts. I have some good Lake City brass attached to some remanufatured M2 ball pull downs so I loaded up some I had pulled. I did not size them, although I probably should have. I did pop the primers out of ten cases and replace with BR-2 primers. The primers that reside in the M2 ball are obviously CCI but I don't know if they are magnum or standard.
All rounds were loaded up with 59.5gr of H4831SC and 180SMK seated .010 off the lands. Each string was 10 shots except the Lapua brass group. Someone had left a shootnsee sight in target up with the diamonds in each corner with a 3/8" dot in each, I simply could not resist and yes I hit it dead nuts, so C is actually 9 shots. I know I should have taken a pic of that with the cell phone too.

Some wierd things happened. First the LC cases I switched to BR-2 primers had the highest SD of the three and the largest group was the second best SD using the primers of unknown origin. Actually I have seen all that before but it is mildly entertaining. There was a flier in group B that very nearly doubled the size of the group, probably me maybe not, it was in the middle of the string and it felt fine.
Group A:As pulled LC Group B: LC with BR-2 Group C:Lapua w/BR-2

Re: 30-06 Tactical by Apache Machine, report

I shot this rifle at Thunder Valley on the Intimidator this past weekend. The rifle was certainly up to the challenge whether I was or not. I did reasonably well for my first time in a match with this rifle. The credit goes to Apache Machine and Custom, he built me an absolute "hammer". I am well pleased in my choice of calibers and care little whether the '06 is cool or not. Thanks for the kind words fellas.

Very nice.. I'd like to do an '06 build in the future, very versatile round, and proven.

Nice rifle.

The more I think about 30-06 as a chambering the more it makes a lot of sense. The components to build a rile chambered for it are readily available, and relatively inexpensive. It can sling nice, heavy .30 caliber bullets at very respectable velocities which create nice big splashes and carry solid down range energy. Lapua brass, a prestigious military pedigree, and readily available ammunition are also big bonuses in my mind as well.

This deserves a bump.

My how the years have flown.

Apache has done several upgrades since 2011.
The loads listed here we're only used at Thunder valley. I came back home with some valuable info from Tom Sarver and completely reevaluated my loads and the methods used to "clock" a load.

My long range load is 55.5gr of H4350 under 190SMK.
Out to 600yds I use IMR4320 and 155Palma SMK. It's 300yd accuracy is nothing short of amazing.
I know that's a really weird powder for the 06, and I've even took ribbing from my friends, but when they see it shoot they just shrug. Can't argue with success. I don't remember the charge or the velocity. I would have to dig out my dope books....honestly I'm not sure where it is. I'm sure my kids will Chuck it out one day as "more of Daddy's mad scientist notes".

It is a shame it's sitting in a safe. I can't shoot it anymore. With what's wrong with my neck it's not worth the risk. I don't think it kicks enough to hurt my neck though. It weighs about 16lbs and it's braked.
Unfortunately I can never sell it, the rifle I built it from was my Father's 700bdl 30-06 I bought him for his 57th birthday(I think it was 57) We had about 5 good years hunting together before congestive heart failure ended his hunting days for good. He loved that rifle, and it was never fired by Daddy, without meat being put in the freezer. An absolute incredible achievement, as he was blind in his right eye and his left was "coke bottle" corrected.

When I pitched the idea of the rifle in 30-06 to Apache, he wasn't crazy about it, but we are good friends, and he understood my motivation. An upgrade, but still a tip of the hat to the old man. I had read what German Salazar had done with the 30-06 and I settled on a copy of his Serengeti reamer. Apache was impressed, everyone in my circle of friends were impressed. I think Steve has built several with that chamber since.

I need to start thinking about orders of where that rifle will go when I'm gone.

I’ve been kicking around what caliber rifle I’m going to build. I’ve looked at 300prc, many of the 7s, at the top of my list was 30-06 though. Because of this post and others from you. I’m going to build a 30-06. I might build it around the 178gr ELD-X . That’s the next worm hole I have to dive down. Gun is going to be for black bear in WA. They are either the size of a big lab or big black bear in WA haha.
