Re: 30-06 vs. 308

I agree, the 06 just gives you a little edge at long range as it is easier to load rounds to keep them up in the sonic range and allows for heavier bullets running a bit faster but all in all to 800 a 308 and 06 run about the same.
It is all a moot point unless you do your bit and load your ammo right.

Re: 30-06 vs. 308

There's a saying in drag racing... "There's no replacement for displacement"

Same thing goes with rifle rounds, and that extra 10-12gr of powder that goes behind an 06 round makes a difference.

You can load anything light, but when you run out of case volume you'd done. It doesn't go heavier.

Re: 30-06 vs. 308

a lot of the .30-06 load data (and thus commercial ammo) is geared towards the original, and now very old turn-of-the-last-century, .30-06 rifles.

A modern action can take a significantly more pressure than an old 1903 action!

However, finding load data for MODERN ONLY .30-06 actions is rather difficult.

Case in point, look at the pressure data for the .270 winchester. It's a necked down .30-06 BUT the .270 came out long after the old .30-06. The original .30-06 cartridge has pressure limit of 58740 psi because these old 1903 actions can't take the beating that a modern action can.

Compare that to the .270 Winchester (necked down .30-06) which has a pressure limit of 65000 psi!

IF you can find modern load date for the .30-06, you will find that the fps that you can push bullets is significantly greater in a modern .30-06 than in a .308.

That's my bag of hot air.

Re: 30-06 vs. 308

The .308 has more available load data, the abiliy to fire handloads out to 1k and sometimes a bit further. There is a lot of info due to its popularity. The 06 has history. It was a prior military round, retired to mostly the status of a hunting round. It recoils harder, and uses more powder to load. But, you can load a much heavier bullet to buck the wind, and get a bit more distance with the standard 168-190 grain .308 bullets. Brass for the 06 is a but easier to come by. As far as load data, there are several guys here, myself included, that load for the 06 and have had very good luck. There is plenty of load data that a lot of guys have developed using modern information. Good luck.
