so, i've got an extra 8" or so of 1-10 twist barrel laying around, and was considering making a whisper-ish upper by permanently attaching a shroud to make it long enough for 16", like the tac-sol sbx. any recomendadions on gas system length, port dia., adjustable or non-adjustable gas block? anything else i should consider? thanks in advance.

Re: 30-221 questions

gas block in the pistol position about .115 (+-.005) in dia, if you're shooting subs and high vel I'd get an adjustable gas block. They get kinda ticklish about feeding subs shorter than 10" so any muzzle accessories that add back pressure cant do anything but help.

Re: 30-221 questions

Never messed with anything other than bolt guns. What minimum diameter would you need for this? I might have a piece that would get you around 13 inches. That is if around .800 is large enough diameter.

Re: 30-221 questions

I would recomend the adjustable gass block alos , I have a friend that runs one on a 16" AR , the barrel is ported like a pistol but when he runs lighter HV ammo through it it abuses the thing so he needs to turn it down

Eddybo , clean out your PM's bud

James.....got it. Let me know if you still have that level. I will pay pal you payment if you take pay pal.

CWshooter, I am pretty sure the stub I have is 8 twist. I had a 28 inch blank and cut 16.5 off when I built my last 30/221.

Re: 30-221 questions

As far as backpressure is concerned, it would run suppressed basically 100% of the time, and I intend to run heavy-bullet sub sonic loads.
eddybo, thank you for the offer of the stub. i think i'll be in good shape with the 8" piece, as I want this thing to be about 17" overall with the can installed. The 8 twist is tempting though. Would I gain much with an 8 instead of the 10?
The intents here are plinking and the occasional hog inside of 100 yards.
I apprciate all of the input, gentlemen.
