I was wondering as a friend of mine has a 30-338 and it has free bore in the chamber. I was wondering if you could or if there would be enough metal to re reem it to 300 win mag?

Thanks,

Re: 30-338 to 300 win mag

You should do a chamber cast and compare it to 300 WM dimensions.

Question is why change ? The 30-338 (308 Norma Magnum) is, in many ways a better cartridge than 300 WM starting with a .318" vs .264 neck.
See the current issue 10/09 pg 38 of Guns & Ammo.

Best bet is to let a gunsmith take a look at it. There could be variations in the chamber dimensions that need to be taken into account.

Good luck

The 300WM is only about .080" longer.
Not likely solve your freebore problem if you are using the 3.34" magazine.

If you are single shot, then it may give you .080" more.

If your goal is to get rid of the freebore (in the leade not the chamber), then set the barrel back and rechamber the rifle.
Given how well many Weatherby Mk Vs shoot with freebore, I guess I'd shoot it a bunch before I did any changing.
