30-378 weatherby

Re: 30-378 weatherby

I have owned a 30/378 Accumark for over 10 years and love it. I compare it as the top fuel dragster of 30 caliber cartridges. Just like a top fuel dragster, it is not for everyone specailly if you are just a ballistics page thumper. It is expensive in every way. Bottom line is with fine tuning, the performance is there. It will just floor an elk out to 400 yds. The loads I use are 180gr Nosler Partitions with over 120 grains of powder. If you learn to shoot it properly it is like no other but I repeat, it's not for everyone.

Well, I bought it in the meantime at a pretty nice and looking forward to shooting it. Its got an effective looking muzzle break on it and the previous owner compared it to a .243- not sure I believe that but we'll see. I'm in S.C. so I don't have super long ranges to strstch it out- maybe 600 yards. I don't know what this fellow was doing with it but he had handloads with 125 grain bullets doing 3800+ fps.Planning on shooting this weekend and I'll let you know how it all works out. Thanks for the input.

Re: 30-378 weatherby

No matter what brake you have on a 30-378, it DOES NOT RECOIL LIKE A 243. At best, it will recoil like a 30-06.

This is a tricky round to load for. Understand that the window of appropriate powder charges is very small. Somewhere between 2-3 grains. Its very easy to go from being low on pressure to being over, in a hurry.

While I don't have a 30-378, I do have an improved version of it. The above comparison with a dragster is spot on. The 30-378 is high maintenance, the lowest barrel life of any round that I know of, burns massive amounts of powder, brass is the most expensive stuff around, and everyone wants to try it out at the range.

On the other hand, its ridiculously fast, incredibly powerful, and will push some heavy projectiles.

Make sure to read several sources before beginning to load for this round. It's definitely not a beginners round.

When the barrel burns up (500-800 rounds), send it in to GAP and have them either set it back and rechamber or rebarrel for it for their 30-378 max improved (300 12 Egg Mag) or 338LM as they use the same bolt face.
