Thinking of trying the 155's, and rather new to reloading. Which bullet should I try first, Scenar, Berger, Lapaus or? Also what would be a good powder/charge to start with said bullet? Best place to buy? Thanks a million

Lapuas are Scenars. Lapua is the brand and Scenar is the model.

No, I haven't chronoed that load... Something's wrong with my chrony. I'm guessing that they are around 2775 though. They are down exactly 14 MOA at 600 yards. I got that number by running JBM backwards and putting in velocities till I got the correct elevation. Temp was about 50 degrees at 200 feet elevation.

Re: .30 cal 155 grainers

By the way I also have a load up in the 47gr of varget range, but I haven't shot it out at 600 yet. I have stuck to the lower node because if all I am shooting is 600 I don't see the need to beat up brass..

Run Varget and good brass(Lap/Win), get either of them above 2900fps and both shoot well. The 155.5 Fullbore and the 155 Scenar are good boolits.

Re: .30 cal 155 grainers

I would go with the amaxs they are cheaper!

Try a box of both and make sure to get the #2156 Sierra.

Re: .30 cal 155 grainers

Imo you cant go wrong with either Sierra SMK, Lapua Scenars, Berger VLD or LRBT, and the Hornady A-max.

I prefer to shoot Lapua Scenars and Sierra SMK's as they are readily available in my area.

Re: .30 cal 155 grainers

I am pretty much in the same boat. Looking to go with either a 155 Scenar or Berger 155.5 Fullbore in the lighter bullets or the 175 SMK or Berger 175 VLD. There seems to be support for both the lighter bullets and the heavier 175's etc. I am shooting 2 .308's. A Rem 700 Custom in an AICS with a 22" Rock Creek barrel with a 11.25 twist and an AI AE MK II with 20" barrel with a 1 in 12 rate of twist. I would like to shoot out to a 1000m and was wondering if the guys shooting shorter barrels had better luck with the lighter or heavier projectiles. Up to this point I have only shot Fed 168 gr GMM out of my work and personal rifles and realize the 168 gr has it's limitations at extended ranges so I am going to start reloading. Any opinions with respect to shooting the lighter bullets at higher speed reducing .308 barrel life or is this a non factor. As I mentioned I have only shot factory match up to this point so my knowledge of the reloading game has a steep learning curve. Thanks.

Re: .30 cal 155 grainers

Vin,

To get the 155s to 1k, I hear you have to drive them pretty hard. Depending on where you shoot, 2,850+ seems to be about where you need to be to get them there. Going by JBM ballistics, a lower velocity may get that far, but to do so consistently and accurately you need as much speed as you can get.

I don't think you will have much problem with either one of your rigs. I'm working up both 155s and 175s with a 20" AR; my last range trip saw my 155 grain Nosler CCs with IMR8208 pushing close to 3,000 fps if not more judging by my drop. I was getting ejector wipe on every case, so I decided to pull the bullets from the rest of those loads and go to the lower node. Also from my last range trip, I did a ladder test with 175 grain Nosler CCs and Reloder-17, settling on 48.8 grains in a Winchester case. At 570 yards I had 12 1/2 MOA of elevation, telling me that they were a smidgen over 2,700 fps with no pressure signs whatsoever.

I would recommend starting with a lower charge and working up though. In the past I got 2,600 fps from Varget under the same 175 grain bullets. I think the heavies are the way to go, personally.

Re: .30 cal 155 grainers

I dont think you would have a problem getting either the 155 or 175 out to 1000 yards in a 20" barrel.

Also, the 155 when pushed at around 2900 FPS can easily go past 1000 yards... a few on the hide have also pushed them way past 1000 (1200 to 1500 yards) and still had them travelling where they would be expected despite transition into subsonic speeds.

Re: .30 cal 155 grainers

If running a 20" barrel I recommend Imr xbr powder ,h4895 or if your rem chamber is generous ,varget with winchester brass.155 scenar ,xbr 45.5-46 gn lapua or win brass,or 45.5-45.9 gn h4895,or 46-47 gn varget .start lower and work up checking pressures. You should be in the 2800-2860 fps range with 20" barrel ,suppresed will get you maybe 20-40 fps more from what I've seen.
