Mt St Helens blew.

I was 14 at the time, woke me up as it sounded like a stick of dynamite going off (100 miles away)...

Re: 30 years ago today...

Was stationed w/ 9th Medical Bn, 9th Inf Div, Ft. Lewis. That weekend down in Portland with a girlfriend. Had to take HWY 101 back (the LONG coast route). St Helens lost her top early Sunday AM. Monday PM I was notified that I would be part of the "ground evac / assistance" from Ft Lewis. Went back down in crackerbox and spent 20 something days near Kelso/Longview and also around & above the remains. Somewhere I have some pics and a vial of ash.

Some things you never forget.

Re: 30 years ago today...

2 years before my time but I've always enjoyed finding ash in the houses I've moved out of. When my family moved out of our first house at Fairchild AFB we found almost 1.5 pounds worth of ash just from cleaning behind all the areas that were "supposed" to be cleaned by all the other people that lived there. The second house on the base had some too but near as much and every house since we still find some in odd places but nothing like the first house.

That happened a little over 3 years before I was born. I have seen pics of before and after, but never together. All I can say is HOLY CRAP! that blew a huge chunk off!

Re: 30 years ago today...

I remember sitting in class, in HS (Madison HS, Portland-66 grad). I use to stir out the window at Mt St Helens, which ofter caused me to skip the next class and head up the Senic Hwy. Along the Columbia river on my motorcycle.

You cant see Mt St Helens from that class room now.

Wow, that was thirty years ago already?!

I remember thirty years ago, listening to people say "thirty years ago" and wondering what it must be like to be so old as to have memories that old. Well, I guess now I know the answer to that question.

Re: 30 years ago today...

Thirty years ago, I was 34, and our Daughter was 9. I have a picture on our wall of her sitting in the woods opening up a foil cooked meal for her lunch. She was my Scout Troop's mascot and came along on every trip.

Wow! 30 years ago I just turned 18 and I was sure I knew everything there was to know. Then I woke up in Parris Island and found out I didn't know squat about the world in general. Its been a great roller coaster ride so far and I figure I'm only about half way through my trip!

Re: 30 years ago today...

Greg, I like the quote in your sig line. It's just so 'you'! It's perfect.

He set himself goals for each third.
