So I may bite the bullet and build a 300 Norma but I'm not sure about the action required to handle the cartridge. I hear differing opinions on the size of the action/bolt assembly and possible flex due to anything that is not in the Surgeon XL category. I currently have a Manners stock being inletted for a BAT HR action which is my first choice but the bolt is .725 I believe and not .750. I'm also looking to set it up to try the Hornady 250 A Tip and while better choices with that action may be a 300 PRC or 300 Win mag, I don't believe I'll get the speed I'm looking for and stretching the limits of those cartridges at the same time with that bullet.

Thanks for any help on this.

I have built numerous .300 Norma, .338 Norma and .338 Lapua Magnums on a variant of the Defiance Machine Deviant. Zero issues and very happy with the results. Also have built several on the Badger Ord 2013 action with good results as well.

While I have built a bunch on the Surgeon XL in the past, I can say it is not doing anything that some of the above listed actions can't deliver.

Stop and look at the number of Sako TRG 42s out there in .338LM that have been performing in severe circumstances. The bolt diameter, locking lug surfaces and receiver wall thickness are on the way skinny side compared to most offerings in the U.S.

Thanks Terry, I've had 2 TRG-42's in 338 and knew the wall thicknesses were thinner than the current choices of actions but I believe the TRG's have a .750 bolt body. Just wanted to make sure the BAT was plenty strong enough to handle it.
