300 win mag 208gr a-max

Good luck homie...I asked for nearly same recipe, but with Retumbo and I got no responses.

H1000 seems to be the powder for 300WM...unfortunately I don't have any and I have a lot of Retumbo.

the hornady 8th has 4000mr data for the 190 soft point but not the 208 a max. 61.3 2500fps 72.1 max 3000fps. so shooting a 208 a max at 3000 would most likley be a fairly hot load.

Yeah but considering they are loading a bullet that is 1.540" long into a case that is 2.610" long at 3.340" COAL , they aren't giving you much room for powder.
Depending on the OP's freebore and bbl length, he should be able to run it considerably faster the longer he's able to seat the bullet (w/o being in the lands) I was running 72.4 grains at 3.615" with the 208 and it was ZINGING and I had no op at all. I would guess 3015 fps + or - a few. I had played with it also on the 215's and it was shooting those faster than the 208's!

yes but swipe marks are signs of a load making dangerous amounts of pressure. so how many psi is that load neither of us know but i bet it is pretty high. yes moving the bullet out you will make a little more powder space moving case capacity up to or a little above a 300 weatherby. it would be reckless to start at 71.8 g with a 208 a max if 72.4 gave 3000fps and the book said max fps was 2850. the max charge for 4000mr with a 178 a max is 74.4 at 3100fps.

Ok. Then you can give him all the advice he needs. It's not a dangerous load. I would never give any data that I thought was EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE TO BEING DANGEROUS. Have you shot it...?? I have... And it's a safe starting point at 71.8 as long as your loading long and no where near the lands. Good day

how long is he loading it? what is he shooting it out of? neither you nor him said anything about oal or the weapon. for all you know he is almost touching the lands with factory ammo. now take that gun run the bullet way out into the rifling and put almost the max load for a 30 grain lighter bullet you might have a problem. that load may be safe in your gun. that does not make it safe in any other gun. i am not attacking you. just pointing out what everything you will ever read in a book about reloading will tell you start low and work your way up.

i shoot 208 a max at 2690 out of my 300wm w 4831sc they are supersonic at 1500y at 4000ft. i also see that the 4000mr is top in the manual for 220g bullet velocitys. i have some 4000mr on the way and some 220 hpbt and 208 a max i plan on working a load up. thank you for your helpful data. i am jammed .010 at 3.6 so i will not get the fps you did
but we will see 208 a max at 3000 that ought to be a wind bucken sumbitch

You know you guys are saying this is unsafe ect... How about the guy loading 73.5 grains of R22??!!! And said "if this helps" !! THAT IS THE DANGEROUS LOAD. Anything over 72 grains of r22 with a 208 is getting on the warmer side....

For your comments about length ect.... " And it's a safe starting point at 71.8 as long as your loading long and no where near the lands. Good day" Located at post #15

i am not saying your load is unsafe. if he started at 73.5 grains of rl22 that would be reckless. when it is worked up in your gun and found to be safe it should be safe. i am just looking at velocity and saying a good starting point for the 208 a max should not be around 3000fps when my reloading manual shows velocities of 2850 at max charges

I worked up to it from 70 gr, and the COAL is 3.685" not 3.340" , which is .020 off the lands in my 28" barrel. It's warm, but IN MY GUN it's fine. I didn't tell him to do it, I just told him what I was doing.
