First check out what I ordered..
http://www.kimberamerica.com/rifles/tactical/model-8400-police-tactical

I really like the rifle... But... Kimber has a 6 month wait at least. I really don't want to wait that long. I was wondering if any one could build me a "at least" as accurate rifle for $1200. I dont mind a VERY lightly used stock or action but the barrel (preferably Krieger) must be a new bull. The barrel must be threaded because Kirby has a "pain killer" waiting for me. I've been shooting a 700 Remy in 308 for a long time but it's time for something with more balls. So if you could, please help me out with a new tack driver. You can email me directly at [email protected]. Let me know what you can do. I really appreciate it guy's... Thanks!!..

Just call me "T"

Re: 300 Win Mag build?

a $1,200 custom rifle build? I seriously doubt it. I don't know anyone who's working that cheaply. Just buy yourself the best rifle you can and upgrade it with what little money you have left over. My opinion, for whatever that's worth.

Re: 300 Win Mag build?

Check out the for sale section on this site... I haven't looked in a while, but someone might be cleaning a Remmy 300 Win Mag outta the safe... I'm not sure the 770 would be the best choice, but I have no empirical data to support this claim so I guess it's a moot point...

Re: 300 Win Mag build?

Don't mean to sound like a dick but the Remington 770 is a terrible choice! You really want to stay away from that crap.

Walmart is selling Rem 700 long action ADL's in the $450 neighborhood. You'd have to get a smith to open the bolt face, chamber and mount a barrel. The trigger you can learn to tweek on youtube.

Or, buy a Howa chambered in 300 win mag. Get a stainless steel one if you can. Up grade the stock to a Bell and Carlson A2 and your off to the races. If you really want a good shooter while staying within your budget, go on gunbroker and buy a HEAVY BARREL Howa stainless steel barreled action. Maybe $800 or so. Add the B&C stock, an EGW rail and you're golden. Yes, I have done this and have been very satisfied with the results.

Re: 300 Win Mag build?

Buddy of mine did this awhile back. Ended up being pretty cheap.

He had a plain jane Remmy 700 LA .300 WM. Sent it off to Krieger for a new barrel and action job. I want to say the bill was somewhere around $600 for all the work and barrel. Took it to a local smith and got a quick $50 factory trigger work over and that was it. In that configuration you could cover up 600 yd groups with a copenhagen can.

I would say He had around $1300 in the rifle itself. Since then it has been dropped in a Mcree chassis and is even better.

Re: 300 Win Mag build?

I have seen some rem 700 5r 300wm for about that price. I have never shot one or seen any range reports, however if it shoots like the 5r 308s it would be a good start. Or find you a donor action, order the barrel yourself, stock and i think you can have the rifle put together by a smith for $1,200.00. The $1,200.00 would be after parts are purchased. By the 5r 300wm shoot it for a while, pick up parts along the way and have it built or shoot it like it is.

Re: 300 Win Mag build?

I,ve looked at the XCR but I haven't seen any where that it has match grade anything like the kimber does. Not to say that it isn't as accurate because I don't know for sure. Is there any compairisons on line? If I kick it up to 1500 will there be a noticeable difference?..

Re: 300 Win Mag build?

Send a 700LA to Gunners Sport Shop in Brookings, OR. If you don't already have the magnum bolt, a PTG can be had that will use your existing internals excepting a Sako style extractor kit. GSS will put a Pac-Nor 300WM bbl. on w/ a thread protector for around $600 and they are TACKDRIVERS! One of the benefits of living on the "Wild Rivers Coast".

Re: 300 Win Mag build?

Try looking into the parts you want individually.

Start with your action first, or you could just find a well used beater and do some presto-chango job on it.

Re: 300 Win Mag build?

umm, this is simple. The answer for that price range is to buy a new rem 5r in .300 win mag and have the muzzle threaded.

The 5r is just a bit over a grand, it's all stainless and comes in a nice HS stock. You could easily convert it to AICS mags with a Hooper DBM if you want that ability. You could change stocks later on to any standard 700LA stock or chassis if you want something different (mcm, manners, AICS, etc.). This also allows you to take advantage of the HUGE aftermarket for remington 700's.

5r's are known to shoot very well, and are probably the most consistently accurate rifles Remington churns out these days. Although I have two non-5r factory built remmys that are absolute hammers, so there really is a good chance it will shoot well anyway.

Threading the muzzle should run you $150 or less from many of our board-sponsoring gunsmiths.
