300 win mag

I have a 300 win mag that I have to stretch the bullets out .250 past the recommended oal to reach the lands. This is a new custom built rifle chambered with a Manson reamer.should I get the reamer re ground to shorten it up?any one else have this problem?

It's not a problem as much as a condition . I had a 700 Sendero that would not shoot for spit unless the OAL was 3.55 and then it magically turned into a bughole shooter.Once I had that information , the rifle was perfect.

I guess you have a Weatherby freebore? If this was a custom job, I think you should have been consulted on the chamber dimensions. I'm not in favor of regrinding the reamer but maybe the easiest solution would be to shorten the threads one turn. BB

When your oal was 3.55 how far was that off the lands?The reamer was a standard 300 win mag from Manson,as far as I know it was not a weatherby freebore

Shorting the threads one turn will do what to the freebore?

Probably won't help, at all, all by itself. You still need to re chamber with a more conventional reamer. Anyway, I meant, like the equivalent of Weatherby freebore, which is a way of increasing velocity by loading to higher pressures but not necessarily, accuracy. BB

edit: maybe the intent was to provide room for seating long heavy bullets way out, without taking away from case capacity? That's what you have, a chamber with a long leade, which was the reason for my comment about Weatherby methods and design. But, it's not normal and the guy should have inquired, before giving you something you don't need and don't want.

I talked to Manson and they are going to check it but I'm going to get reshaped either way,hopefully it will be on their end so it won't cost me but I will still have to set the barrel back and rechamber

what bullets are you using?and does it shoot poorly at that length? you may be chasing your tail to "fix" a problem that isn't one.
unless they wont fit your mag. . . .then you have a problem.
