Re: .300 WM Barrel Length
I have one bolt gun. I use it for hunting, 1000 yards, varmints, etc.
When I had it rebarreled this year, I went to 22". I am not even slightly disappointed:
Factory 180 gr. fusions rated at 2950 measured over 3000 fps. on my chrono.
Still in load development, but so far:
200 gr. SMK's over 72 gr. RL22 in Nosler brass, CCI LRM primers, 3.400 OAL (mag. tolerant hunting load) - 2920 fps. sub-MOA 10 shot groups out to 600 yards (shot 5 rounds under 8" at 940 yds on steel).
208 gr. AMAX over 77 gr. H1000 in Nosler brass, CCI LRM primers, 3.600 OAL - 2840 fps. sub-MOA 10 shot groups out to 200 yds, have yet to distance test.
(H1000 shows signs of unburnt powder exiting the barrel)
This barrel is so new I have yet to confirm all my loads at distance, but preliminary data is very encouraging.
If you're looking for velocity at all costs, you'll have to go longer. But 22" is a very good compromise in my book. (If you're worried about muzzle flash you'll either have to stick to faster powders or go longer, but then, 300's are not exactly discrete
) YMMV. Good luck.

p.s. ask Mike at Tac Ops what he'd recommend. It was after reading his article I decided to drink the kool aid. See Here:
