28", why not 30"? You'll gain about 15 fps per inch, normally. But you may only gain another 10 fps or less from a 29" to 30". My 2- 300WM are 26" and 27", and work great.

I'm in far North Dallas near George Bush and Dallas Tollway.
You will get extra fps with added barrel length. You get a diminishing return the longer the barrel is after about 26"-28". So, if it is a gun going from the truck to the bench and bench to the truck, it can't hurt going with a long and fat barrel.

Sweet Carolton frisco area. My rifle will be my long range canyon hunting rifle. If it was 29"-30" it would be a pain to get to my spot. Seems like 26" or 27" is the way to go. Still will be a heavy barrel though.

when i get around to rebarreling my 300 win mag, i'm going with a 30". it is going to be dedicated to beyond 1k prone use and not dynamic match use. i want to squeeze all the velocity out of it as i can. it works pretty good now at 26" with 210 vlds at about 2950 fps.

Is that a max load. Or can I expact that with my 300 win mag as well. I am going to be using G.S. Custom bullets. They make a 197 grn bullet with a b.c. of .824. If i can get them to shoot I think that these will be an awesome combo.

i'd have to dig up my info on that but i suspect it is over the max book load. i didn't shoot my 300wm at all last year so i can't remember for sure. of the top of my head (don't trust me on this), it was around 76 grains of h1000, 215 primer, winchester brass and a 210 vld. my barrel may be fast also. i was getting well over 3k fps with factory federal match 190's with this rifle.
i don't know anything about those bullets but i'd expect to be able to get a 200 grain bullet to 3k fps with a 26"+ barrel. you may be running it hot (be careful) but i think it could be done.

Looking at their chart on that 197 grain bullet, you'll need a 1:9" twist or faster. That's a pretty fast twist for a 308 in a 300WM. So, you will lose some velocity with that twist. With this bullet, I would seriously look at a Bartlein gain twist barrel. You could start the twist at a 1:12 and finish it at a 1:9" at the end. This would help with the velocity.
