Does anybody have a recommendation on company to go with on the barrel? It's going to be a sendaro.

Thanks all,

Re: .300 wm build opinion / barrel recommendation

what grain pills do you plan on shooting? Im partial to Kreiger, Bartlein, Broughton. I shoot the 208 Amax and 210 Berger VLDs. If you plan on shooting heavy, and long range, go with a 1:10 twist 26in barrel for max velocity / stability.

+1 on quickest!! They're all good in the hands of a competent gunsmith!!!!

Re: .300 wm build opinion / barrel recommendation

I don't have experience with the above mentioned but I was running a Schneider on my .308 and I was very happy with it. My .300WM will also be getting one in a 1/10 twist and I believe they are running about 6 weeks to get.

I'm sure any of the above barrels will get you what you want, and as mentioned it would probably be more important to pick the one that you can find available depending on your time line. Beyond that just choose what bullet you want to put down range and pick the twist that is appropriate.

Re: .300 wm build opinion / barrel recommendation

I was considering having the barrel nitride finished. I don't know enough about it just yet.

Are there any companie's that sell them like this? Is is that a smith job?

I've only heard that the finish increases barrel life (and accuracy?). That would be nice considering this will be a .300 wm.

Thanks for the responses so far.

Re: .300 wm build opinion / barrel recommendation

I've never heard of a finish increasing barrel life but I've been wrong before. Barrel life is based on number of rounds through the barrel before 'throat errosion' starts to set in. That's where the chamber pressures and the projectile leaving the casing start to eat out the throat of the chamber and then the concentricity of the bullet-to-bore contact goes to shit, making accuracy erratic. But finishes will protect the rest of the barrel and can make the rifle look great. I run a stainless Broughton 5C at 24" with a 1:10 twist on my 300WM and shoot 200Gr SMK's with sub-1/2moa (on my good days). But ALL of the above mentioned are great options. +1 for whichever one can get to you the fastest.

Re: .300 wm build opinion / barrel recommendation

I'm running a Schneider P-5 10-twist M40 contour finished at 26" on my 300WM and couldn't be happier. I actually called Schneider today about ordering a barrel in the same configuration for another build.

What kind of groups are you getting?

This build of mine is going to be fun. Heavy 26" sendaro barrel "possibly nitride finished" isn't going to kick that much especially with a muzzle break on it

Does anyone know what real benefit's are with nitride finishing? I have read a little and it seems it's still in the test stage if you will right now.

Thanks,
Ms

Re: .300 wm build opinion / barrel recommendation

Barreled action came with 40-rounds of SWA 220-gr SMK loads, and they shot Ok - sub-moa, but very hot ~ 3000-fps. I was planning on using the Berger 210-gr VLDs since my buddy was having good luck with them, and I wanted the rifle to double as a hunting rig for Elk.
Anyhow, I drank the 208-gr Amax cool-aid, and never turned back. When I first started load developement I was getting frustrated because nothing I did would result in very good groups, just barely sub-moa. Then I hit that sweet spot using 75-gr of H1000 and an OAL of 3.60, which gave me a slight bullet jump. If I do my part, the rifle will do 1/4" groups and I even printed a few 1/4" groups at 200-yards. Initial chrono readings were 2830-fps, but now that I have a few hundred rounds down the tube, that same load is now over 2850-fps. I checked the numbers last week with my 338 Surefire can on it, and they were moving as high as 3000-fps with the can.

One thing I may suggest for you, if you plan on shooting multiple rounds over a course of lets say less then 5-min., I'd suggest you go with a heavier profile barrel. With the Sendero profile barrel you will experience barrel heating causing stringing. If it's a hunting rig, then the Sendero profile is a good choice.
