I was trying to duplicate the 2864 fps load for the 210 grain Sierra Match King and 300 Win Mag 1000 yard load referenced in a NavSea Warfare Center Crane, Indiana presentation titled US Navy Small Arms Ammunition Advancements that was on the web(see http://www.dtic.mil/ndia/2009infantrysmallarms/tuesdaysessioniii8524.pdf).

The following are 3 shot averages from a M24 build, using Rem 9 1/2 large rifle magnum primers. Each charge was weighed with a Mettler Toledo laboratory scale with a accuracy of +/- .04 grain.

RE-22

70 grain 2807 fps
71 grain 2820 fps
72 grain 2844 fps
72.5 grain 2867 fps
73 grain 2873 fps

I am now using 72.5 grain RE-22 and the 210 SMK for 1000 yards. It came closest to the NAVSEA specs and interestingly, had less variation in velocity than the other loads (this may have been chance, given the small number of rounds measured).

Anyone else using 210 grain SMK and RE-22 for a 300 WM 1000 yard target (e.g. F-Class) load?

Re: 300 WM, RE-22 and 210 SMK for 1000 yards

R22 is a good powder for the 300 WM. Most people will use H1000 or Retumbo when you get up to the 210 and 220/225/230 grain bullets. You can get a little more speed with the slower powders. And R22 is a little temp sensistive from winter to summer. I shot R22 with a 190 SMK for years, and it does very well. It's still a good powder for it.

Re: 300 WM, RE-22 and 210 SMK for 1000 yards

Was this at 1000 yards? If so, what was the weight of RE-22 and velocity that gave the best accuracy for the 190 SMK? (I have a box, just haven't gotten around to working up a load for it to use at the longer distances.)

Re: 300 WM, RE-22 and 210 SMK for 1000 yards

MLCM, from my experience, the 210 SMK consistently performs the best out of my 300WM all the way out to 1000 yds. However, I use 77.3 gr of H1000, which yields roughly 2830 fps out of my 26" bbl. I think I tried RL22 with this bullet, but wasn't impressed with the SD or the groupings. Are you limited to using RL22? If not, I recommend trying out some H1000.

H1000 will get you where you want not dissing re 22 but H1000 and 210's make beautiful music together.

Re: 300 WM, RE-22 and 210 SMK for 1000 yards

I shoot the 210 Berger vld. With 72.7 r22. 2907 +~ a few. My build is a spec 700 police with a few upgrades. My scope is mrad. At 700 yards it's a joke on a 24"x24" ar500 plate painted. According to my data, you would have to come up 25 moa (depending on scope height , altitude, temp). which is 73 .01 mrad clicks.

Re: 300 WM, RE-22 and 210 SMK for 1000 yards

I'm zeroed at 200 yards and I come up 24.75 MOA to get on at 1000 yards. This is both from the NightForce ballistics program and from the field. One of the few times the NF program and the field experience agree so closely on elevation. Wind corrections are another matter!

Can anyone comment on their 1000 yard accuracy for this load?

Re: 300 WM, RE-22 and 210 SMK for 1000 yards

Just some data from the range this morning using 72.5 grains RE-22 and the 210 SMK with a velocity of 2867 fps in 300 WM.

For the 10 shot string at 1000 yards, the vertical dispersion was 1.1 MOA (11 inches) and the horizontal dispersion 1.4 MOA (14 inches). I did not make any corrections for wind during the string.

I suspect this load is actually more accurate than my ability can show but for now, this is the closest I can come to testing for accuracy!

Re: 300 WM, RE-22 and 210 SMK for 1000 yards

A191 is/was 73.5gr of RE-22 under a 190SMK loaded a bit long to go with the MK-13 tubes from Crane. A262(?, I think that's what it's called I'll have to look at the box again) is using the 220gr SMK with ~72.5 of RE-22. I only had 5 to take apart and that was the average. I will say that they were A LOT more consistent that A191 as far as powder throw goes. If you were to find some there was a lot that came out early on that was SMOKIN' as in get a hammer for your bolt fast. Don't have the Lot#'s unfortunately
