Has anyone ever seen a load for the 300wsm with a 208 using Varget. I know the burn is really too fast but I am running a 20" barrel. I've tried IMR 7828(very low velocities due too short barrel I think), RL17, H4831 and settled on IMR4350(been shooting this load for a year). Best velocity was RL17 but it was very sensitive to temperature. Best accuracy was 4350 at 61.5gr. I figure 4350 isn't far from Varget but the charge weight will be a fair bit different I think and I don't know where to start. During load development things just seemed to get better as the powder burn got faster. I love this bullet and I should really just put it in a 300 mag but I have an attachment to short actions and short rifles in general.

Re: 300 wsm 208 Amax with Varget?

I had a 300 wsm and found the case capacity to be an issue. Trying to get the velocity I wanted with my preferred bullet without being a compressed load was a chore.

My purposes were for hunting, so I used the 180 gr TTSX and R17. I was looking for 2900 - 3000 fps and I got about 2950. Avoiding compressed loads was a priority for me, since I planned to hunt and travel with my rifle. That made achieving the results I wanted more difficult in the short mag.

I don't have experience with the 208 Amax, but I found I had better luck with Norma brass versus Win brass. Also, CCI LRM primers gave me better results than did Fed 215 primers. Good luck.

Check out my recent posts in the reloading depot under 300/300 wsm loads.
Your never going to get a varget load to perform with that heavy of a bullet. barrel length doens't have that much of a factor with powder selection. If you get a higher velocity in a long barrel you will get a higher in a shorter barrel for each given powder.
I would go back to H4350 or H4831/H4831 SC
Also I wouldn't be worried about a compressed load I am running a compressed 208/H4831 load and it has been shooting under 1/3 minute 5 round groups when shot from a bench.
Good luck.
