Since I left the Military years ago I only shoot for fun on weekends. I've only owned .308's. A friend is offering a great deal on a .300 WSM but I don't know much about this caliber. Can someone enlighten me?
Pros and Cons? Thanks.

Re: .300 WSM

A fellow member, Rodent, shoots a 12" steel target at a range of one mile with a 300 WSM and 208 AMax's.
And I witnessed him shooting a groundhog at just under 1000 yards with it.
You could PM him for more info.

Re: .300 WSM

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but on paper factory loads are similar to 300win.mag. I have one myself in a Win M70, my only complaint is the cost of good factory ammo. Reloading is def in my future with this one.

Re: .300 WSM

300WSM is a faster round (around 2800fps). With a 200gr SMK at 1000yds thru a 300WSM your elevation correction in 29.5MOA. With a 308win at the same range and bullet at 2300fps your correction would be 46.5MOA.... Night and Day.... Barrel life is just as good as a 308, and you have a wide array of choice of projectiles.

On a bad note..... Brass is more expecive for the 300WSM, and you burn more powder with a WSM. I reload the 270WSM and like to use GM215M primers. They also cost a bit more, but I like to know I'm burning up all of the powder before it get down the tube....

Its a good round with a lot of power, and very accurate. I shot one for 2years, they arent cheap to feed, my reloads were around $.90-$1.25 a round, not including brass. That was running 185grn berger vlds, pushed with viht n560, with br2 primers. I liked mine, but I can shoot twice as much for half the cost with a 308. Will it do what the short mag can? NOPE. But can my 5r out perform me? YEP. Its all relative. Honestly, the only short mag I would go back to is a 7wsm. If you are looking at the 300wsm, why not just buy a 300wm? More options for brass if you reload, and more match factory ammo if you dont. Plus, I would think the barrel life on a 300wm would be better than the short mag.

Re: .300 WSM

ubet,
How many rounds did you get out of your tube before you barrel started losing accuracy? Only reason I ask is a shooting partner of mine has 3500+ down his tube and he's still cutting better groups (.346MOA) than my 270WSM (.487) with 300 rounds down the tube at 100yds. Here is his load:

200gr SMK
RL-19 64.9gr
Rem 9 1.5 Mag Primers
Winchester Brass
Velocity: 2780fps

Re: .300 WSM

I have been playing with 300WSMs for a few years now and they are plenty powerful for their size. To me they require more effort to shoot accurately than a 308. It was a natural choice for me because I am very deep into .30 cal stuff. If you get one set up right I think it is a great cartridge. I do have a factory 300WSM that has given me grief and when I get it re-barreled the old one will be disposed of with great prejudice.

Re: .300 WSM

Hugo, less than 1k. My loads were a little fast probably, somewhere in the 3050fps mark. I was dropping 3moa at 300yds 8.75 @ 600, IF I remember correctly. I probably would have got more life out of them, had I been shooting 210s or 208amaxs. But in mine, I just couldnt get it to like anything over the 185vlds consistently. Its an awesome cartridge, dont get me wrong, but I would go with a 300wm instead. Probably look at carbon wrapping it, or melonite treating if I were to have another wsm.

I loved the cartridge, was just more than I needed.

Re: .300 WSM

ubet,
Wow, you were wipping them out of there.... Can't get much flatter than that

I agree that a 300WM could be a good alternative, but if he can get a smoking deal on the 300WSM I won't knock him for it....

Re: .300 WSM

TomD,

For all practical purposes it is just as good as a 300 Win Mag. If you are going to do any amount of shooting, you would definitely want to reload for it. Good brass is available through Norma. I think it's a great cartridge.

(Still like the good old 300 Win Mag too!)

While barrel life is less than a 308, let's be realistic - you would have to shoot a lot, and I mean a lot, to shoot even a 300 WSM barrel out. And who wants to spend $0.90 to $1.25/round at approximately 2,000 rounds of barrel life... do the math.

If TomD is into obtaining peak accuracy and reloading, the Norma brass is actually slightly cheaper in 300 WSM than it is in 300 Win Mag. There is no question that Norma makes the finest 300 WSM, or 300 Win Mag, brass available today (Lapua does not produce 300 Win Mag brass anymore).

Re: .300 WSM

Here's a little reading on the 300WSM. I would suggest a good muzzle brake. I have a GAP titan on mine now. I first had it with no brake and it gave me a flinch and I wouldn't shoot that rifle much. Yes, I'm a wimp. After sending it back to George for a brake, I shoot it quite a bit more. Now I shoot about 100 rounds a session and not 10 or 15. It kicks less now than my 308s, more so like a 223 ar-15ish. It's very accurate to add.

Re: .300 WSM

I have LR applications in both 308 and 300wsm.Although I do like 308 the 300wsm is a far superior round.
I was out Shooting at 1000M a few weeks back.Had a full value wind from north to south about 8-10mph.I was shooting identical bullets 175smk out of both cartridges. The 300wsm would tag the 15x15 inch plate at 1000M consistantly 7 out of 10.The 308 hit 3 out of 10 and was much more inconsistant.I relize 1000M is pushing it for 308 but I was still impressed how the 300wsm held its consistancy at that range. We took it back to 1300M last weekend with no wind and the 300wsm held right there with some 300WM that were out that day.300wsm is a Great round
