As the title states which and why? Gun will be used for long range shooting up to 1000 yards. Don't think I will go further than that but might if I need to impress someone :) maybe some long range big game hunting too. Elk moose and bears mostly. Thanks for the expertise guys.

go with the rifle that you can get in the correct calibre setup for long range shooting if you can get a sendaro in 338 Ultra that would be my first choice as it is almost the same as a 338 lapua in loaded balistics but if the 300 is only available go for it, If you are building a rifle get the 338 edge just the 300 ultra necked up. as you state it will be used for bears, moose and elk the 338 has a lot more energy and frontal area to create terminal performance.

study the ballistics charts for each round and make the decision - 300 will likely have more velocity and less energy given the same case but different bullets (300 is the same case as the 338 just necked down afaik)

have fun shooting either, it'll be pricey.

If these are your only 2 choices then, I would run with the 300 RUM...just because after you put paper and pencil to it.....it's cheaper to shoot....

...if it’s cheaper to shoot you’ll put in more trigger time…which is what is needed for your plans with said such calibers...especially if you want to be proficient and consistent. And 1000+ yards can be easily obtain with the 300 RUM.

The owner of Bear Mountain Sports just took a pig at 834 yards with his 300 RUM. I really like the gun. Cost wise I would have to agree that the 300 will be much cheaper than the 338.

The 300 should easily be able to knock down anything in the North American continent. On the other hand the 338 will pretty much destroy anything on the continent.

After having shot both calibers, I can honestly say that the recoil on the 338 is way more than enough to make you not want to shoot it all day long. Or for more than 20 rounds for that matter. Find which you will shoot and practice with, that will give you the ability to hunt LR and shoot LR. Just having the gun doesnt guarantee either. Just my opinion.

Re: 300RUM or 338RUM? Which and why???

To my understanding the 300 has more recoil. I think it exits the muzzle at a higher velocity... Hmmmm in second guessing my self I gotta check a ballistic chart....

Personally I chose the 338, there is always room to grow on the 338... Other then having to move to a 50.

Re: 300RUM or 338RUM? Which and why???

Muzzle velocity is an important factor when determining recoil in approx ft/lbs, but it is only one of the factors. I would suggest you download Pointblank ballistic software if your current software doesnt calculate recoil. Its free so you dont have anything to lose.

The recoil between a .300 RUM and the .338 Ultra mag (any ammo for that matter)has to do with the weight of the gun, the grains of powder, grains of the bullet, and the muzzle velocity.

So you can see that depending on any of the four variables, you can change the felt recoil. Pick your gun and ideal cartidge for both and then plug in the numbers. Have fun and good luck!
