I just received my new rifle from AJ and Mark. This is the first rifle built with Bighorn's new long action. It's everything you've come to expect from the short action version.
Specs:
Bighorn long action/magnum bolt face
Bighorn 20 MOA rail
Mark Chanlynn 26" 1:10" twist med palma contour barrel throated for the 208 A-max
Surgeon bottom metal/ AI mag
timney trigger
Nightforce 5.5-22x50 NP-R2 reticle with NF rings
Mcmillan A5

I'd like to thank Mark and AJ for the quick turnaround on this custom project. Also a big thanks goes out to John Wall for the smoking deal on the Mcmillan, Nomad for the bottom metal, and dpreston for the rings. I found a sweet spot at 76 grains of H1000 and will play around some more from there. Looks to be a great 1/4-1/2 MOA rifle. She's still in the white. but I had to take it to the range to play around. I'll be coating it next week. Thanks to the hide for great sponsors and information.

Re: .300WM Bighorn Arms/Rocky Mountain Rifle Works

Ran it pretty hard over the weekend, including some 10 shot rapid fire strings that could be covered by a quarter. The action is flawless and runs like glass. AJ and Mark have scored again with their long action version. The go to load seems to be the 208 Amax at 76 grains H1000, win brass, Fed 215M primers at 3.60 OAL.

If you're getting .25 MOA from the 300 WM you've got a smokin rifle. Keep up the good shooting!

We have a civil war cannon shoot this weekend at 500 yards. I'll be able to strech it out then during setup. It's broke down right now for coating and Atlas rail install. I'll snap a few more pics when all the goodies are on.

Just added pictures post coating. I used the OD green on the bolt knob, shroud, mag release, action screws etc. I think it turned out alright...

Re: .300WM Bighorn Arms/Rocky Mountain Rifle Works

I've been in AJs shop every day for the last two months telling him to hurry up with my magnum action. I need a 375.
I saw your action getting cut. I was pretty cool seeing the first one with chips flying. AJ and Mark know a lot about accurate rifles.

MarK did some work on one of my M4's years ago and I have seen some of the AR's and Bolt guns he has produced, top quality and his barrels are excellent.

I was talking to him about the big magnum action in the works for a .338 lapua that my uncle is considering having built. Good things coming out of that shop. I wish NY allowed cans.. there'd be a CO. Built one of those too.

Re: .300WM Bighorn Arms/Rocky Mountain Rifle Works

Can this action be loaded through the ejection port once the magazine runs dry?

When cycled at gunfight speed, will it reliably eject a live round?

Re: .300WM Bighorn Arms/Rocky Mountain Rifle Works

Beautiful weapon. Good to hear the 208 AMax is working out well. I've got a few (hundred) ordered! Any reason you went without a brake? CKruse

the answer to both of your questions is YES. Even with the Amax loaded at 3.60" it'll eject reliably.

I went with Mark Chanlynn's opinion on that one. He's the expert, maybe he's a lil old school in not liking to hang things off the barrel, but the accuracy speaks for itself. Recoil is not bad at all, possibly the brake would aid in being able to spot hits qicker. Mark wanted me to shoot it without a brake for a season, and would add one if I desired. Still undecided.

Re: .300WM Bighorn Arms/Rocky Mountain Rifle Works

Nice stick pipewhiner. Was the McMillan A5 inletted for a standard Remington 700 long action? If so, other than the thicker rear tang not sitting flush, how was the fit?

Re: .300WM Bighorn Arms/Rocky Mountain Rifle Works

The McM was a standard R700 inlet. The only other difference is in the bolt handle where the 700 has a slightly swept back deisgn and the bighorn is straight down. It fits fine with a little modification. AJ puts the bolt release high enough to not require a notch like some other actions.

Re: .300WM Bighorn Arms/Rocky Mountain Rifle Works

That looks great! After you get a few range sessions in, you should post back with a range report after a good bit of use.

The floating head design of the bighorn arms action is intriguing. LL seems to like it. Despite bighorn being here in town I haven't really had one in my grubby paws yet to look at.

So far, out to 500 yds. Maaintains group size in the 2-3" range. Very little vertical dispersion less than 1". The left to right is the loose nut behind the trigger. So 1/2 MOA at 500 is pretty good for me.
