Hello..I keep reading on here about the growing popularity/effectiveness of the 7WSM. I have a new Rem 700 Long Action and am planning on building a 300WM for out past 1000 yards, but the more I read it seems the 7WSM has better ballistics.

So..which would you build?? I see some guys build the 7WSM on the long action. Any disadvantages/advantages to that? I would most likely build the 7 on the long action that I already have. I'm just rethinking which caliber I want before I actually do it

Thanks,

Ummm, 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your long action will work just fine, it will also allow you to seat those 180 Bergers or JLK's way the fuck out there!

Re: 300WM vs. 7WSM

7mm Rem SAUM i believe it is a slightly better designed case but it and the WSM will be better than the 300, The only advantage for the 30 cals comes if you require more energy and in that case it is better to step straight to the 338's

Re: 300WM vs. 7WSM

they are going to be really close in trajectory and windage if you can drive the .284 180 vld to 3000 fps in a wsm and the .308 210vld to 3000 fps in the win mag. the 7wsm does it with less powder and cheaper bullets. i still really like the 300 win mag but the 7wsm is sounding pretty good, especially if you need to squeeze everything you can out of a short action. since you have a long action, you are going to need to decide if you need the extra energy and burn the extra powder that the 300 win mag does.

Re: 300WM vs. 7WSM

The 7wsm will enjoy about half the barrel life of the 300wsm.

Re: 300WM vs. 7WSM

I have both and so far I can't really tell the difference. I am leaning towards keeping the 300 and selling the 7wsm. (just cuz the 7mm has less rounds down the pipe) I shoot the 210vld out of the .300 at 2960fps and the 180vld out the 7mm at 2950. The only thing that changes is your elevation, but as far as shooting 1650yds to out past a mile it is just as challenging.

That isn't my experience. The 300 has gotten me 2-300 more rounds per bbl on average.

Re: 300WM vs. 7WSM

They both run about the same in elevation and wind when you pick the top 2 bullets by BC. The Bergers cost a little more. I personally would pick the 300WM, and neck size. The 300WM will have slightly more energy than the 7WSM.

7WSM at 1K with 180 Berger at 2950 fps w/ 10 mph cross wind
fps-1698.8
energy- 1153.4
MOA -24.68
Wind- 5.50

300WM at 1K with a 208 A-max at 3000 fps
fps- 1716.4
energy- 1360.6
MOA -23.94
Wind- 5.48

Thanks for the replies

. What can be expected in terms of barrel life with the 7wsm vs. the 300WM shooting the 208, 210 vld's? I'm still undecided, I still kinda want it in 300WM.

Re: 300WM vs. 7WSM

I have both, 7wsm built for me by surgeon, A5 stock, the other an AIAW 300wm. they are both great guns and calibers....which one???? man, the brass is better for 300WM, but the 7wsm win brass ain't bad either. it ain't lapua but shoots bugs nutts with 162 amax. They both kick ass, just more component availability and factory ammo for the 300 win mag. I love both of these guns---it's a tough choice
