308 168 smk

Re: 308 168 smk

Try Powder Valley or any of the other vendors around. Don't forget the discount codes if you order from midway.

Re: 308 168 smk

If they have to be Sierra's...look around.

I use Nosler Custom Competition. They are almost identical to SMK's. Almost.

Mid south shooters supply has the best deal on them.

308 168gr SMK HPBT (500)

Powder Valley = $137.68
Midway = $149.99
Grafs = $147.99
Brownells(Sinclair) = $145.49
Midsouth = $132.74

Re: 308 168 smk

Our club does group buys straight from Nosler. I think I paid ~ $140/K.

Re: 308 168 smk

As mentioned use the nosler 168's instead, they are 195$ per 1k at powdervalley. You will not get SMK's for cheaper.

If you're just doing practice or shooting service rifle (ie, m1a garand) consider the pulled 175smk that RMR bullet is selling. 170 per 1k.

Have you tried Hornady 168 grain AMAX bullets? They shoot very much like 175 grain SMKs out of my 1:12 24" Rem 700 and are reasonably priced in the 250 count packs. At 2750FPS the AMAX168s shoot better to 1,000 yards than the 168 grain SMKs because I think they are moving faster and possibly behave better as they go transonic.

JBM using Litz's data shows the AMAX 168s stay supersonic a good 140 yards farther down range then SMK 168s. This combined with the AMAXs better behavior going transonic could be why the SMKs seem to struggle getting much past 800 yards and the AMAXs are fine out to 1,000 yards.

Just something to consider before you commit to buying 500 bullets.

HTH!

Re: 308 168 smk

I'd second going to AMAX from SMK. The AMAX does everything better and last I checked a bit cheaper.

Workz for me

The only AMAXs that work better than SMKs for me are the 168 grain bullets. I've been trying to get the 178 grain AMAXs to work better than the SMK 175s but they just don't seem to fly any better than the 175 grain SMKs. On paper the AMAX 178s seem to offer no advantage and this seems to be confirmed on the range. The 178 AMAXs don't fly any any farther and they don't seem cheaper enough so for a 175-178 I've just stuck with the 175 grain SMKs.

HTH!

Re: 308 168 smk

+1 for 175 SMKs. I just don't get the performance from the 168s that I do with the 175s. BC of the 175s is 0.505 vs. 0.462 for the 168s.

Re: 308 168 smk

My bad,
I was referring to the 168 Amax, it was 2.5moa flatter at 600 yards when shot at an F-class match a few years ago.

I never looked back.

I know several tacticool shooters who swear by their 178Amax loads, perhaps they will chime in with why they selected the Amax over the SMK.

Re: 308 168 smk

Try nosler custom competition, they are way cheaper than SMK's and shoot the same in everything I have tested them in.

I think you have the right bullet (AMAX168) for inside 800 yards. I'm running right at 2730FPS with the chrono 10' in front of the muzzle and this is a really good shooting load for me. The AMAX168 at this speed go to 1,000 yards as well as my best SMK175 or AMAX178 loads do. I have a factory 24" 1:12 twist barrel.

The AMAX168 should not be that much flatter at 600 yards, maybe 1/2 MOA. But maybe you were seeing a little extra velocity from the reduced case volume because you were seating to 2.80" COAL instead of seating to ogive height.

When you seat your AMAX168s try seating them to the same ogive height as the SMK175s and see if they fly a little better. The AMAX168 is a little bit longer bullet and the ogive is a little bit farther back along the bullet's length so seating the AMAX168s to 2.830" COAL puts the ogive pretty close to the SMK175 ogive height with a 2.800" COAL. This is what works for me YMMV but if you have not tried it give it a shot. You will need a comparator of some sort to do this though.

HTH!

Re: 308 168 smk

thanks guys i have a 1 in 10 twist and the 168 shoot realy well in my shilen 25 1/2 barrel i cant get the 175s to shoot nere as well but have not tried the 168 amax i have shoot 600 yd match f class with 168smks and shoot very well the 168s have been giving me 1/2 inch or less groups at 300 yds and hve been very good for shooting dime on the first shot at 300 dont know why i might try any thing diff. the rifle is a 700 long action stainless shilen barrel choate stock with removable clip

Re: 308 168 smk

Stop shooting dimes at 300yds just adds to cost of the bullet
